Are you familiar with this man?
My boss told me about the story of this man. He is a famous actor in China and Hong Kong and everyone knows him. I can also see his TV shows and commercials everywhere, as well as his banners, billboards, and even his photos with vendors at the market. I was curious about his real-life story since my boss only mentioned a little story about him, I looked for it online, and here's what I've got. A must-read story and for sure, you will be inspired by his story later.
Chow Yun Fat is a Chinese actor famous for crouching tiger, hard-boiled, bulletproof monk, pirates of the Caribbean, and other Chinese movies.
While his colleagues live a luxurious life, this man surprised the whole world. Chao was born on the small island of Lama to a very poor family of farmers and had simple and mundane childhood. From an early age, he needs to get up early at sunrise and feed the animals and headed to the market to help his mother sell pies. After that, he then hurried to school but after classes, he had no time to play because he had to get back to work.
His life was no different from millions of other ordinary boys, however, that didn't last long. In 1968, the Chao family moved to Hong Kong in search of a better life, and since Hong Kong is a rich country, they certainly needed a lot of money to live in Metropolis.
The family barely made ends meet sometimes, and didn't have enough money to rent a small room. After realizing that his parents couldn't handle the situation, Chao dropped out of school at the age of 17 and began looking for a job. At that time, Chao had no idea what he wanted to do, so within one year, he managed to shift from one job to another and tried himself at nearly everything.
He worked as a delivery boy, a loader salesman, a handyman, however, whatever he'd try, he always gave it up soon because it wasn't what he was made for and we can only wonder how a life of an ordinary boy from a poor Chinese family turned out if it wasn't for what happened next.
One day, he's looking through job ads multiple times, he came across the TVB channel's casting call. Everybody thought he was crazy, he had little of anything to do with the television. Many even told him not to waste his time on pointless things and they advised him to find a real job and harbored no illusions, but nonetheless, he thought that he should at least try.
Chao neither had the education nor experience in acting. He didn't even have a suit for the audition. Despite it all, he decided to continue and try. And out of 100 people that showed up that day, the casting director chose Chao. He was beyond surprised when he approved him for the role. After all, compared to the rest of the applicants, he was simply a village boy without education, but that was exactly what appealed to the casting. And that casting marked the beginning of Chao's acting career.
It took a lot of effort and time before the actor achieve what he has today. He won Hong Kong film awards many times despite not having finished school or any acting experiences. He simply remained on screen even on stage and that's what people like about him. He was able to achieve what others could only dream of and his fortune exceeded 750 million dollars.
Many find it hard to believe that someone as wealthy as Chao would be able to afford anything in the world and many of us would definitely indulge ourselves, but for him, happiness has nothing to do with money.
His lifestyle may seem strange to many because, given his wealth, it's surprising that he lives like all the regular people. He also claims that he only needs $200-300 a month to get by today.
Chao is already 65 years old and has been accepted by Hollywood and yet America hasn't seemed to be a second home for him. He still lives in a Hong Kong apartment with his wife and visiting California only to shoot films or for business negotiations.
But despite his honestly earned wealth, the famous actor wat fast foods from street vendors and even use public transportation and can often be spotted walking on the street without any bodyguards. He's always willing to take pictures with ordinary people and giving them autographs.
The actor says he doesn't care about the privilege that people think of him. He wears clothes for himself, not for others and he only went to be comfortable. He also says that the hardest part of life is keeping a positive mindset not the need to make money. He wants to live the rest of his life carefree and down-to-earth person.
Chao is the brightest Asian representative actor in Hollywood and he has been nicknamed the Emperor of the Asian box office in his homeland. He's even been using the same Nokia phone for 17 years he handed for repairs several times and continued using it until it finally broke. It was only 2020 when the actor bought his first smartphone.
However, his personal life didn't go smoothly as his career. He married a daughter of an influential man, the first year was great but soon turned out that the couple couldn't have children of their own which bolt out in news. Over time they managed to live peacefully with it and went on to live in mutual understanding and love for each other.
Many are amazed that his wife supported his lifestyle without demanding expensive things for more than 20 years. He's still been using public transport to move around the country and you can easily spot him right on the street.
And despite having their own house, Chao invited 20 closest friends to celebrate his 60th birthday in their small apartment including Jackie Chan and his wife prepared all the food herself. The couple eats at home most of the time and they don't have a housekeeper so Jasmine does all the chores, cooking, and grocery shopping at the supermarket. It's also been an ordinary thing of Chao to help an elderly crossing the street.
You couldn't imagine how this famous actor can manage to dine with famous Hollywood celebrities, shake Brad Pitt's hand, or pat Jackie Chan's shoulder, then the next day he'll take a regular flight back to China instead of taking a jet plane. He likes taking the subway alongside other ordinary people.
Chao repeatedly spotted helping strangers and many of those who got in trouble. He had transferred money to their accounts and the same happened to a large family whose house burnt down. Shortly after their story was covered on TV, the amount hundred thousand dollars to their account. The sender was anonymous but many are sure that Chao did it.
Chao treats everyone with equal respect, be a waitress or an assistant, he never puts himself above others despite being famous and wealthy. He doesn't really care about money, he just wants to live as an ordinary person and enjoy every new day. If he wished to become a Mayor or President, for sure he'll receive enormous support from normal people, but Chao doesn't even want to try politics or putting up a business.
Chao loves his job and loves making other people smile and never hides from his fans.
Since Chao and his wife don't have a child, he decided to donate all his money to a charity after his death. Every single cent, the money will go to orphanages and hospitals, as well as low-income families and large families. That is based on his latest statement and as he's said, he owned all the money he earned but at the same time, he's just holding it until it gets donated to the charity. His speech on the event made all people stand up and applauded and some even cried.
While listening to his story, I got emotional because despite being so famous and rich, he never treated other people as strangers to him, he remained ordinary like others. In fact, I've been seeing different photos of him with different vendors at the market. If you will walk on the street of Hong Kong, you can see his faces all over HK, in TV shows and advertisements, banners, and posters.
I never thought that he lives his life that way. I even watched some of his movies before and I admire his acting skills. Who would have thought that a celebrity lives an ordinary life and mingles with ordinary people?
How I wish to see him on the street of HK so I could take photos with him as well. It would be a privilege to shake hands and take photos with a famous but humble celebrity of China and Hong Kong.
Chao is an inspiration to millions of people. He's just an example that, no matter how rich you are, you shouldn't downgrade ordinary people. Learn how to look back on the past and live a happy simple life. Money can't buy happiness, be down-to-earth, live a carefree life, and treat everyone with respect.
