Nowadays, having a pleasing personality is always a part of job qualifications. Most people define the term as having a good-looking appearance. You have to be good looking to be qualified for a job. You need to have a neat appearance, well dressed, put on makeup, and so on, only to pass the job interview. This standard is often the reason why many job seekers are backing off upon reading the job qualifications of the company where they want to apply.
The term "pleasing personality" is often misused by some companies. They view people with good physical appearances as more intelligent, more skilled, and more competent. Moreover, people with 'not that good' looking appearance tend to apply for jobs that are out of their expertise with no "pleasing personality" qualification. They tend to work in low profile jobs just because they failed to meet that qualification in their preferred company. If this is how those companies view the term "pleasing personality," then what would be the use of skills and experiences?
We can't deny the fact that being in this competitive era and the corporate world, having a pleasant appearance during a job interview shows an understanding of the corporate culture and that the applicant can easily fit into the dynamics of a workplace. A decent impression truly matters to get hired, but technically speaking, real skills and knowledge should be the first things to consider in accepting job applicants. And managing the pleasing appearance can be the next thing to deal with.
But what does "pleasing personality" certainly means?
It is always a misconception by many defining the term "pleasing personality" as "good-looking." And that job seekers with good physical appearances are the only qualified to apply for a particular job requiring that kind of qualification. Pleasing personality doesn't have anything to do with how a person looks. This thought only causes discrimination, downgrading the 'not so good looking' people, and attributes low self-esteem to failed applicants. A "good-looking" qualification can be required for jobs like receptionists, front-liners, hoteliers, endorsers, and other jobs that need to represent the company in front of the clients and or persuade customers.
People should understand that the real definition of "pleasing personality" is having a positive perspective towards life and the chosen job, flexibility in handling different circumstances at work, having fair and friendly characteristics, a good listener, and a conversationalist. It's about having the ability to entertain and attend to the needs of the clients or customers, engage with co-workers and employers in a positive approach that will benefit both the company and the employees. It is all about having the ability to get along with everyone and feel them good about themselves.
But what are the factors and characteristics that constitute to develop a pleasing personality? And how to pass a job interview without having a good-looking personal trait?
Be Optimistic
Being optimistic is necessary for all aspects of people's life. It is a vital tool in pursuing one's goal. Having positive perspectives towards everything can help you overcome each roadblock that you will encounter along the way.
The significant thing in withstanding a strenuous job search is to change your frame of mind and start to think positively. During the interview, if you are optimistic, to obtain a more effective interview. If you think optimistically, you also know that rejection is always a part when it comes to seeking a job. However, you also believe that rejection is only one step closer to a better opportunity. An optimistic mind can change your fortune. You only need to apply it to all aspects of your life.
Be Confident
It is so understandable that beauty and confidence have different definitions. However, a person can be beautiful if he/she is confident to handle any situation and to face the world. But, beauty is worthless if he/she doesn't have the confidence to carry that good personality trait. Being confident implies that you trust yourself in all aspects.
In regards to passing the job interview, another thing that you need to acquire is confidence. You should present yourself in front of the interviewer that you are confident and capable enough to carry out a particular job. Be confident to address the questions thrown by them. Tell them your skills, not your beautiful face. You don't need to be good-looking, only trust yourself. It will lead the interviewer to have trust in you. Just be presentable, be real, and be confident.
Be Flexible/Resilient
When you have resilience, you can adapt so handily to all circumstances without losing your track and causing yourself to become frustrated. If you are flexible, you will be able to execute all the necessary tasks without compromising other things.
As I have mentioned above, rejection is possible when it comes to seeking a job. So if you have consistency in your emotional disposition, you won't easily get irritated when the interviewer bombards you with a pile of questions to test your personality. You won't feel down in accepting rejection. Instead, you will understand it fully and will make it a challenge to do better next time.
A versatile person knows how to regulate responses in line with the pressures of other people.
Be Sincere and a Good Listener
Sincerity is one quality of character that can not be effectively modified. A person who is honest in all aspects can attract positive results. Honesty is a virtue. It will also drive people towards you and will make them trust you. Meanwhile, a good listener knows how to understand every circumstance and acknowledge things with a positive approach.
When it comes to a job interview, many job seekers bring out their bags of tricks in an attempt to impress the interviewer. However, an insincere person displays his facade, and it is noticeable through actions and expressions. Many recruiters want honest and down to earth. They can determine whether you are fit to work for the company if you are completely honest.
Be honest and not boastful when showing your skills, experiences, qualifications, as well as your strengths and weaknesses. Be a good listener and respond honestly to questions about your weaknesses and missing areas of knowledge. Show them your acknowledgment and your determination to improve them.
Be Presentable and Always Smile
In this world, physical appearance is truly the first impression that is commonly judged by someone's looks. Being presentable doesn't need to be pretty or handsome. It is how you fit into this new world. It is how you carry out things and responds to every situation. And a single smile can make a big difference in people's perception of a person's looks.
During the interview, your physical appearance is always the first glimpse of your judgment skills. We know that an applicant should be judged according to skills and not by physical appearance. However, dressing appropriately shows your respect and your willingness to follow the directives in the workplace. Being presentable will also boost your confidence. When you look at your best, it has likely to bring out your best performance. And always remember to put on a smile on your face. Sometimes, a single smile can persuade the interviewer's perception of your looks. Who knows? That smile might be your tool to withstand the arduous job interview.
So the next time you seek a job, always remember that "pleasing personality" doesn't mean to have a good-looking appearance. Just having these five factors, you will be able to overcome the challenges that will come on your way to obtain a certain job that you are want to attain.
Be optimistic. It will attract positive results into your life.
Be confident. It will help you withstand a strenuous situation.
Be resilient. It will drive away your positive emotions and elements.
Be sincere. It will make other people trust you.
Be presentable. It will boost your confidence that will help you reach your goal.
And always remember to stay happy, and put a smile on your face. It will change other people's perceptions of your entire physical appearance.
