The Rough Journey It was many years ago, but I still remember vividly all that happened during that untold journey. I was in the company of ten young men and two young women who were trying to travel to another country to work because we felt we were facing too much hardship in our own country. What was wrong with us was the fact that none of us had valid papers to show at the boarders that would allow us to cross. This alone was a risk we were going to take. But we had in mind that we could pay money to the officials as bribe and get our way through with ease. We were actually going to Libya through Burkina Faso, Mali and cross the desert. We thought we had a lot of money that could take us through the long journey. From Kumasi through Bolgatanga to Burkina Faso was without any problem whatsoever. We spent two days at Burkina Faso waiting for a vehicle that could take us to Mali. This, we had on the second day. The vehicle was not a bus such as the kind we have in Ghana 🇬🇭 but a cargo truck with no roof. We were over fifty packed like sardines in the truck. None of us could speak French or any of the languages most of the passengers were speaking. We kept quiet as much as possible in order not to show that we were from Ghana. It was a whole day's journey and we landed in the capital city of Mali🇲🇱 late in the night. There was no place for us to go since we knew no place and could not even ask where a hotel was since we could not speak the language. We were also afraid that by asking, we could land in the hands of a rough person or a criminal who could take us to a dangerous place. The decision then was to sleep at the station in the open. We looked at something to eat (tea☕ and bread🍞 to be precise). The night passed very slowly as we could not sleep. By 6:00GMT in the morning, we were trying to find out the next possible route to our destination. Fortunately, about three of the passengers we travelled with from Burkina Faso we're also trying to go to Libya. They could speak French and this was a good advantage. After finding out that, these three gentlemen told us that a vehicle left each night to the desert where another vehicle would pick us to our final destination. We, therefore, had no choice but to wait patiently tipp nightfall🌠🌃. One bitter experience we had at this time was lack of bath😫 (I mean you know how well a good bath helps after a stressful day and a bad indecent meal). For four days, we had not washed our bodies😪. The water we got from time to time could only be used for brushing our teeth and washing our faces. By 20:00GMT, our journey through the vast desert to Libya had started. One thing that worried me was the number of passengers was not as great as I expected and a lot of them alighted at various destinations. So finally, we were alone in the vehicle to a point we did not know. Another vehicle was supposed to pick us from that point we did not know. An other vehicle was supposed to pick us from that point straight to Libya🇱🇾. By 10:00 in the morning, the fifteen of us including the three gentlemen had reached this place which is supposed to be the next stop to wait for a vehicle to Libya. This place, was where our troubles started. We waited and waited on the desert on the desert from hour to hour⏱️ but there was no sign of a vehicle. The place was a vast desert with a few buildings scattered here and there. The people we met were very much unfriendly. Then about 18:00GMT, three strong men with bows and arrows came telling us through signs to follow them because no vehicle would come and they would lead us through a short route to a Libyan border town. We followed them in the cold night through the desert. We had hundreds of thoughts running through our minds. After an hour of walking, from nowhere we were surrounded by over ten more strong men who immediately attacked us, robbing us from whatever they could seize from us. Sadly enough, they captured two ladies from amongst us and where they took them, I can not tell even now as I am writing✍️. But I know that they would definitely be raped and murdered later. As for us, we struggled with them and overpowered some of them leaving two of them dead while we ran back in the night until we came to where our sad journey started. Luckily, the same vehicle that brought us had arrived with some passengers. We had no time to waste but to join it back to Mali🇲🇱. This ended out dreams to Libya🇱🇾. Recipe for Jam Jam is prepared by boiling fruit with a sugar solution until it forms a 'gel' which sets on cooling. For jam to keep well, the sugar concentrations should not be less than sixty-five per cent otherwise moulds will grow on it in no time. °••Proportions of ingredients required••° ✓ 800g (2 lbs) of fruit ✓ 800g (2 Ibs) of sugar ✓ 1 litre (2 pints) of water (reduce water for pawpaw) ✓ 1 medium size root of ginger ✓ 1 lemon (squeezed) juice °••Method••° √ Wash, peel fruit and remove seeds if any. √ Cut fruit into cubes (or gate if possible). √ Wash and grate ginger. √ Grease the pan or pot to prevent fruit from sticking to the pan. √ Put grated fruit, ginger and water into the pan and boil until it becomes very soft. √ Remove from heat, add sugar, stir to dissolve and add lemon juice. √ Return to heat and continue to boil till jam sets. √ Pour jam into sterilized jar(s) or bottle(s) whiles still hot and wipe sides with warmth cloth. √ Cover the jar(s) or bottle(s) and label with dates. Healthy Tips (Part 7) Honey🍯 Honey is one of the most essential food items that have a lot of medicinal qualities. The use of honey as medicine dates far back as in Ancient Egypt, India, Greek, China and Rome. Before we look at some of the medicinal qualities of honey, we should also note that it is dangerous to use diluted honey. The use of diluted honey (honey mixed with water) causes a lot of side effects. The honey will no longer be powerful. A cup of honey is richer than taking cups of milk, eating five eggs and eating many kilograms of meat. Children suffering from sickle cell disease should have given a mixture of one spoonful of honey, the yoke of egg, half piece of orange and lime. This should be given daily. For rheumatic pains take two spoonfuls of the mixture of an egg yoke, a like and orange. Squeeze the juice and filter it, mix it with 12 fingers of banana and a half cup of honey. Take two spoonfuls of the mixture three times a day. For smooth skin mix four big spoonfuls of honey with one and half spoonful of wheat and one spoonful of olive oil. Smear the mixture on your body and face. After twenty minutes wash your body with water. You can cure your cold and flu with a mixture of two spoonfuls of lime and one teaspoonful of honey to be taken at a time. 📝Diary📝 On both sides of the stream lay the jungle. Once a while our boat moved so closely to the bank where we could touch the vegetation with our hands, and look right into the jungle. The climbing plants appeared to have been deliberately wound round the trees like Christmas decorations. It was all green, so dense, so quiet, so crowded, so cold, so alive, so empty, and yet so obviously inhabited. We saw no animals except a pair of black monkeys setting motionless on a branch. Poverty Poverty, is a disease, which has affected millions of Africans. But let's first ask ourselves this simple but thought-provoking question. Who is a poor person? A poor person is someone who can hardly afford one good meal again. That person is always under-nourished and looks very pale. The poor person has no decent accommodation. He or she sleeps in ghettos and in uncompleted buildings. The poor person has no good clothes to wear. He or she is always in tattered clothes and sometimes walks bare footed too. Some poor parents can hardly send their children to school. If they do, payment of the school fees becomes a problem and their wards usually become school drop outs. They grow up to become a danger to society as they may engage in armed-robbery, and prostitution. The poor are never respected in their communities and people always look down upon them. Their ideas and opinions, are never taken and considered to be foolish and also irrelevant. This places them in a very bad situation and they grieve until they die. The Power of Body Language There are different ways of communicating. One is the use of words and the other is body language. Body language is the act of communicating with another person by using the various parts of the body. You see a young man or woman leaning against a tree or a pillar with hands crossed. This may suggest that the person is worried or lost in deep thoughts. Waving of the hand can mean more than one thing. It can mean 'good-bye' or 'no' as an answer to a question. Nodding off the head upwards and downwards means acceptance but turning of the head to the left and right positions means the opposite. A child who frowns before his parents may be either angry, disturbed or disrespectful. A child coming home from school with all smiles over the face tells the parents of that child that he or she is in a very happy mood. But if an elderly person smiles, it carries a hidden message. The person may be happy or angry. One who walks with his or her head down is often disturbed. If he or she walks with his or her hands crossed behind his back that person too is much disturbed. The power of body language is more than words can say. The Jungle of Amazon The jungle of Amazing also called or known as "The Unknown Land" is a vast land in the continent of America. The dwellers of the Amazon are primitive people. They are all white and tall. They go about naked. They are called "Yanomama". They live as a community in large circular houses called 'shaponos'. Each shapono community has about on hundred people. They have no days or months or even years and have no system of numbers except that they know 'one' and 'many'. Any time they move, they carry everything they won in their backs. They make fire with fire drills, with the rubbing together of two sticks. The Yanomama wear no clothes; they paint their bodies in circular designs of red seed paste from a plant. Girls and women decorate their faces by inserting sticks through holes in the lower lip at either side of the mouth and in the middle. They are violent and bloody and are ready to kill. The men rape the women. They live their lives fighting and killing their neighbors. They are far from the modern world and may continue to stay and be that way in the years ahead. The Lost Continent Plato, a very learned man who lived thousands of years ago, wrote the story about the lost continent called Atlantis. A lot have been wondering about the great mysteries that are under the ocean deapths. It may be true that there lies the remains of buried civilizations deep down in the ocean. It may again be true that there are strange beings swimming about a mile deep down in the ocean. There is this strange record of events that have been taking place at a particular area in the Atlantic Ocean. A ship or plane passing over this area can just vanish with all the passengers on board. And no trace of survivors or bodies can be found anywhere. When we hear of such stories, a lot of questions come into our heads. Which is advanced people or forces are behind these mysteries? Modern Science with all its advanced technology has not been able to come out with any reasonable answers.
