On both sides of the stream lay the jungle. Once a while our boat moved so closely to the bank where we could touch the vegetation with our hands, and look right into the jungle. The climbing plants appeared to have been deliberately wound round the trees like Christmas decorations. It was all green, so dense, so quiet, so crowded, so cold, so alive, so empty, and yet so obviously inhabited. We saw no animals except a pair of black monkeys setting motionless on a branch.
