We sometimes think that the person we are today will always be the same person we will be.
If you were asked, are you the same person you are 5 years ago? 10 years ago?
Your answer is probably, no. Its easy for us to say that we changed and say what those changes are than saying what we will be in the future. Despite the awareness that our past self is clearly different from our present self, we tend to think that who we are today is the "real" version of ourselves and our future self will basically the same as who we are today.
Our personality, skills, likes, and dislikes change over time. Whether we are intentional about the changes or not. Change is inevitable, but it's not totally out of our control.
Here are some strategies to help us become our desire future self.
Distinguish our former, current, and future selves
We tend to place extreme emphasis on our present selves. We tend to cling to our current identities and speak clearly in definitive terms about who we are like, "I'm not good. "I'm an introverted person." These way of thinking leaves a room for change and growth. When we assume about our self, we stop seeing alternatives. When we believe we are depressed, we tend to think that we are depressed all the time. The truth is, we are not the same person as we are in the past. We don't do things the same way we once did. We no longer want what we once wanted. Instead of focusing ourself of who we are today, we must recognize how much we've grown and changed from our former self. Once we start to distinguish between our current former selves, it becomes possible for us to view our selves as a different person as well.
Imagine our desire future
It's much easier to stay to the present, than to imagine a different future. But if we don't take the time to imagine who we want to be, then we will relatively become whatever life drives us to be. There is a famous quote says, "A man without ambition is like a ship without destination." We can't grow without a direction to that growth. We need a clear goal to shape the process. Having a clear goal makes us know on what path we should take.
Change our identity narrative
The identity narrative is the story of our past, present and future. If our identity is rooted only in our past and present alone, it can fixed our mindset that will make our personality permanent. But if we focus on envisioning our future self, it is possible to change our identity narrative. (Now, I understand why my teachers always makes us write a autobiography). Telling people who we want to be is incredibly powerful. If we decided who our future self will be and find the courage to share that vision to others, it becomes possible to transform into our desire future self.
We should know what we want for our future. We must embrace the uncertainty and the changes. We must embrace learning and failure. Don't let "now" be our meaning. We must take action in building our future self and it will grow our own ever-evolving-self.
