In this article, we will look at the top five (5) facts to know about blood cancer. Before we jump into the facts, it is best to know what blood cancer is and the primary types.

Blood cancer develop as irregular blood cells begin to expand out of control, affecting the functionality of natural blood cells that fend off infection and create new blood cells. It is a situation that no one prays for or wishes for anyone because of its dreadful nature.

Most cancers of the blood, also known as hematologic cancer, begin in bone marrow where blood production takes place. In this article, I bring to you 5 top things to know about blood cancer.

Leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma are the three primary forms of blood cancer:

Leukemia: is a type of blood cancer that originates in the blood and bone marrow. It takes place as the body produces too many white blood cells abnormally which interferes with the capacity of the bone marrow to make red blood cells and platelets.

Lymphoma

a.       Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma: a type of white blood cell that allows the body to combat infection, is a blood cancer that grows from cells in the lymphatic system known as lymphocytes.

b.      Hodgkin lymphoma: is a cancer of the blood that grows from cells called lymphocytes in the lymph system. Hodgkin's lymphoma is distinguished by an irregular lymphocyte called the Reed-Sternberg cell.

Multiple myeloma: is a blood cancer that begins in the plasma cells of the blood, a type of white blood cell formed in the bone marrow.

Now that we know what blood cancer is, let us see the top 5 facts.

1.      In children and teenagers less than 20 years of age, Leukemia, Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, brain neoplasms and other nervous tissue are the most prevalent forms of cancer.

2.      Age is the most important risk factor for the growth of myeloma. People under the age of 45 rarely contract the illness, although those under the age of 67 or older are at highest risk.

3.      Around 31 percent (31%) more males live with leukemia than females. More males than females are diagnosed with leukemia and die of it.

4.      In all ethnicities, leukemia appears to be the 10th most frequently occurring type of cancer.

5.      There are no reliable screening methods for early diagnosis of blood cancer. Screening procedures such as mammograms for breast cancer and colonoscopies for colorectal cancer can aid with the early diagnosis and prevention of these cancers. While scientists are finding ways to avoid or diagnose all cancers in their early stages, there is none for blood cancers at this moment. As a consequence, people normally don't know if something is wrong until they have signs/symptoms

There you have it. The five top facts about blood cancer that you should know. Though it may seem like a situation of despair when one is diagnosed with cancer but know that some patient come out of it alive, hale and hearty. Nothing is impossible.
