General tips on dealing with difficult bosses.

Some bosses can be very difficult to comprehend right? They sometimes make you feel someway. Well, I don't know for you. But generally, some bosses can be somehow rude and even sometimes do not pay you on time. I want to share to you what I have learnt from those experiences and how to cope with such bosses.

  • Don't listen to people's comments about your boss.

It is no wonder that as soon as you get it into a new job the old stuff especially those who have worked with such so-called difficult bosses, might want to prime you into believing that their boss is a difficult one even though you might not have had any form of encounter with the said boss. In my first job after secondary school, I got employed as a teacher in one of the leading schools in my metropolis. A few days of the resumption of my duty,an old stuff told me how difficult it was for anyone to please the then boss. And how he could disgrace his stuff even before the students. I believed them initially so my mind was made up that I might never be able to impress my boss with my work. But as time passed I realised that what they said was unfounded it might have been so in their case but my story was a different one. Indeed he was more than pleased with what I did and at one time he asked for me to work in his office and with the highest salary margin just within the first 6 months of my engagement an unprecedented phenomenon at that time!

People always make an opinion of others based on their experiences. More often than not these opinions could be more sentimental than the truth. As much as you might likely be primed into believing that a boss is a difficult one it behooves you to believe it or not. Until you experience the person one on one never believe such allegations.

  • Be ready to adapt and deliver according to your bosses preferences.

I often realise that this is a very difficult thing for people who have worked in other places before moving to their new jobs. They wish to repeat the same things they used to do even at the new post no matter what a change environment they might find themselves in their new job. Everybody has their own way they will prefer things to be done for them and that's why every business or corporate setup or organisation has its own culture. If you don't want to get on the nerves of your boss it will be prudent to adapt to the new ways of doing things in your new job. don't try doing things the old way you used to do them and when asked to change it will say this is how we do it. if you want to gain promotion you must be flexible and prepared to do things in anyway according to the preference of your boss. Don't get stuck in your old way of doing a job there is always a different and perhaps better way of doing the same thing you have always done be open for change. Of course that is not to mean you should bend the rules, or engaging in illegal practices. whatever is against your values or the standards of your industry or practice you must have every right to use towing that path.

  • Building your own self-confidence.

It is a challenging thing to do if you have to work for a boss who criticizes almost every work you do for them that is the abuser kind of boss. Though, they might mean well, your self-confidence may assume a downward spiral. Building your self confidence is a very necessary ingredient in the quality of your delivery at work. You shouldn't deliver with low self confidence and self image . Speak positive words to yourself . If they say you're not good enough it is a good way to ask for what you should improve in. Don't see them as witch hunters, see them as people set on your part to make you an excellent person. A positive mindset coupled with good self-confidence is a sure way to win over negative comments and destructive criticism.

This is my experience. I hope this article will help boost employees morale not to give up. Just put in your best and the sky is your limit.

I absolutely agree with you, you have to keep a leveled head and not just jump to conclusions because of people's opinions, however, what if people's opinions were true. I had a two supervises, one who was sexual harassing me as an intern yet people said "oh they are a good boss. But it was the so called bad one (The other superviser) who helped me. So you are definitely right πŸ™Œ thanks for writing this.

What I have seen is we curse the boss then when we become one, we behave the same way.

Yes especially when you have gone through the same treatment. You will also do it to someone to make it even too. Good point.

Adaption and adjusting is the key to have a good relationship with a boss. Showing interest and eagerness on duties and responsibilities, and never say no any intervening task.
