He was just a small Shepherd boy, taking care of the father's sheep in the woods. That morning, just like every other day, he had prepared to take the sheep out for green pasture.
His father stopped him. "Please help me take some food items to your brothers", he said. David's was excited. His brothers has been in the army camp because of the war between his people and the enemy. He has been longing to go, but never allowed because he was just a boy. This was a great opportunity for him to see what the war front looks like.
So, he set out and got there with much enthusiasm. He made his senior brothers, delivered the goods, but when it was time to go something happened.
A giant from the enemy came out from the opposite end. He challenged his brother's army to bring out a man to fight him. In his words " if your warrior defeat me, me and my people will serve you as slaves and if I defeat him, you all will serve us". David was enraged and depressed, not because of how boastful the giant was, but by how his people trembled and ran into hiding and no single soldier among his people were ready to fight this man, not even any of his brothers. After a few secret enquiries, he found out that this same man has been coming out to say the same words for forty days. Gosh! That's more than a month and nothing is done. "Why did I bring food to people that can't challenge just one man to battle" he pondered.
He started asking a seemingly funny question. What will be done for the person that will kill that giant? His answer seem to have been in the hearts of all the soldiers, they all said the same thing: the king will exalt his family above others in the land and give him his daughter to marry. When the eldest brother heard about his enquiries, he got angry with him. Who did you leave those few sheep for in the forest?" He queried. David didn't pick a fight with him, only walked away and straight to meet the king.
When he told the king that he's ready to fight the giant, the king was surprise to his bones. He advised him not to try it. "You are just a boy, but that man has been a warrior for years, you can't fight him" he advised. David responded that he had what it takes. He told him how he killed a lion and a bear that came to snatch his sheep in the forest, with his bare hands. "I'll make that giant one of those animals" he declared.
His CV looked attractive, so the king decided to allow him, besides if he died he's not more valuable than the tones of soldiers he lost over the months.
The King's armour, shoes and apparel were tried on him, but it was too heavy for him. He couldn't move. So he opted to go with only his Shepherd's stick and sling. He picked five gravels for his sling and took off to fight. The giant was amused by who the enemy's army sent. He disdained him, but David ran towards him and released just one stone into his forehead.
That was enough to get the giant down and dead. David won the battle of many months with just a sling and little gravel.
What if he refused to try, considering his lack of experience and qualification? What if he listened to his brother and the king, who actually cared about his life?
There's always a first time. Go for it today!
Nobody is qualified until they try!
Have a great evening.
Thanks for this. Well-written
