The Oppressor and the Oppressed II

They said we are one, they said we have one voice that we laugh together and cry together. "Your tears is our tears, your cry is our cries. When you are happy, we are happy together and when we cry, we cry together. I assure you that we have your interest at heart and despite our different cultural backgrounds, we still want to let you know that we are united and that we are one people”.. Politicians during electoral campaigns.

How true are your words when you never do what you say? Yes we are one people and yet we are divided, divided one people if I may say.

“We will improve the education standard and make education free and the cost of living low”

How true are these words when there is no free education and the poor can’t afford the national university? Shame on them, who only eat with us when they need our spoon. Shame on them who claim to solve our problems, while they need our support. Shame on them who only remember us because they want what we have.

When it is time for election, they troop in to tell us how united we are and plead humbly for our votes. We perform our civil rights and select them to lead us, but that is the end of the story. All promises made are forgotten and the true wolf who came in sheep’s clothing shows itself but woe to them, for their heads are like bread baked without a single flour.

Dear readers, the biggest lies is the one we tell ourselves, the self-conviction that what is white is black and what is black is white. We know the truth and only the truth can set us free.

The state of the federal universities in my country is like a mare in broad daylight. Unbelievable to say that since February till present, the whole school has been on strike action, not even the non academic staffs are left to stay. All students especially those on the finals are left stranded and hopeless, all because the government has refused to pay the Academic Staff Union the agreed amount for their salaries.

We were promised heaven and earth, but not even a sand was fulfilled. These are the leaders of tomorrow, the future of the country, look at them now. They are like a sheep abandoned by their shepherd. What do you expect of them when the wolves are watching and waiting, it is either they turn to be a wolf or wait to be the prey but unfortunately, no one wants to be a prey. Sheep turn to wolves and the nations crime rate arises so high on daily record. The people who are supposed to do something have their own sheep abroad, where they lack nothing nor struggle to survive. They take them far away from the land they have rejected and treated bad even when they said that our cry is their cry.

Whose business is it now, when they don't feel the pain they cause on us. We all know the truth, what has happened, what is happening and what is yet to happen.

Two days ago was supposed to be a relief for all students who have been home doing nothing but waiting for the strike action to be called off but rather, the worse that has happened before happened again. The strike action was extended till three months which is from now till August. What hope do we have when the roof that is supposed to protect us is against us. They are interested in their political offices and would do anything to being power but would do nothing to put smile on the face of their very own children.

"The king's treasure is really more important than the king's army"

People had passion for education and gave it all to be educated. Their parents sacrificed the little they have to see their children be a graduate and secure a better future, but this is what have become of their Faith. Mockery from the street by those who say that "school is scam" Are their words not true while they see everything happening under the sun?

The government claims not to have money to fund our university, their own university of their fatherland but can always afford the money to send their children to school abroad, they can afford travelling abroad and spending millions to get a political seat just to be in power. They claim not to have money to settle this strike action problem but yet, they have "one hundred-million" to buy their presidential form to contest for presidency. Almost one hundred government candidates aspiring for a presidential seat with a form worth 100 million Naira. Shame to them all. This is what they are teaching the future leaders of tomorrow because it is believed that when a cow feeds on grass, the calf looks and learn from her mother.

Twenty percent of students sitting at home doing nothing have made up their minds not to go back to school again, they have joined the street who says that education is a big scam. Who is to blame? the sheep or the shepherd?

Some students who still have hope, are waiting and hoping that one day, it will be over and they will go back to school to complete their "four years" course on the "sixth year" What will a sheep do when it is abandoned and forgotten by the owners? this is a question that I can't answer anymore because all students are gradually loosing interest in education because of the government's inability to fulfill their own words and promises.
