Hey, how are you all doing? I am sure we all are doing great. Are you yet to see rusty or is already visiting you? If you are still waiting for him I will advise you to stay calm cos it will very soon and for those that have started seeing him, congratulations to you all. Let me move to the topic of the day without delay anymore, we all are familiar with the title and I don't think there's no one here that will say No to this.
Bribery and corruption is the common language in every country, the only difference in every country is that the rates at which is being practised vary a lot. There is no universal definition of bribery but all definitions have in common that it involves someone in an appointed position acting voluntarily in breach of trust in exchange for a benefit. This means it happens to those especially those in high positions or people we know that has a great influence in a particular field or environment. The benefit they receive does not have to involve cash or a payment exchanging hands. It can take many forms such as lavish gifts, hospitality and expenses, access to assets or a favour made to a relative friend or favoured cause.
Transparency International UK ( fighting corruption worldwide) defines bribery as the offering, promising, giving, accepting or soliciting of an advantage as an inducement for an action that is illegal, unethical or a breach of trust.
Inducement can take the form of money, gifts, loan, fees, rewards or other advantages ( taxes, services, donations, favour etc ). My country as an example has gone deep in this bad act, only a few people can categorically come out and claim to be innocent of this. We all are involved in this act in one way or the other. It is rampant in our educational sector when a rich man sons and daughters want to enter into the university and has written all the necessary exams but failed or doesn't meet the criteria. They go ahead to pay ( bribe) some high people in the school who can help with the child admission into the school. Did I just say the rich man, the poor also are involved in bribery, bribery is a respecter of no one. Different examples that I can mention under bribery but I will try to group them under the various type of bribery that we have. We have two major types of bribery which are
Active bribery
Passive bribery
When a person offers promises or gives bribes, it is called Active bribery but When a person request receive or accept a bribe, it is called Passive bribery.
Examples of Active bribery
Bribing a public official in order to;
Be awarded a contract in the briber's favour
Channelling bribes to win public contracts through a consultant
Payment of small bribes to customs officials to expedite the passage of goods through a port.
Employing public officials son to influence the award of contracts.
Examples of a Passive bribery
This takes place mostly in certain operating functions for instance;
Security: A security officer in a company accepts a bribe from criminals to allow access for theft.
Allocation of goods and services; an employee favours a customer by expediting delivery at the expense of other customers or giving a preferential allocation of goods and services.
Recruitment; an executive demands a bribe to appoint or promote a person who would otherwise not have been selected.
You all could relate to those examples listed above because they are common in our vicinity or environment. If not around us, we must have heard them from one or two peoples mouth or from the news. There are many effects of this bribery and some of them are;
Damage reputation; if an individual or a country as a whole who is involved in bribery is caught, it damages the reputation of such a person or country. People won't want to respect such a person or country again, they talk bad about such a person.
Affect the country economy; countries that are popularly known for bribery and corruption are always backward in their economic growth because no country will want to be involved in a business with such a country and that reduces the growth of the country economically.
Lowers one morale; if someone involves in bribery is caught for example in a workplace, it lowers such a person morale and does not yield productivity of such a person in their working place.
There are many effects of bribery and corruption but I just have to list out these few ones so as not to bore you too much with it. We have different penalties for this act and it varies across all countries. In Nigeria here, a person caught in the act of bribery is expected to pay a fine and also be sentenced to jail for several years depending on how severe the bribery is or the judgement passed by the court.
We shouldn't take part in bribery and corruption because it is not a good thing to partake in at all. Thanks for reading, remain blessed.
