Participating in Community Service

The building of the community, society and nation at large is not only the roles and responsibilities of the government alone, but in one way or the other the citizens also has some roles and responsibilities to play for the growth and development of the nation, in which participating or involving in community service is one of the roles and responsibilities.

Community service simply means the voluntary work done with a view to help people in a particular area. It can also be defined as the work done by a person or group of persons that benefit others. Community service is often done in the area or community where you live. People volunteer to help the community they live in to become a better place and they do not get paid for the work done. Community service is often organized through a local group, such as a a place of worship, school, or non-profit organisation. You can also start your own community service projects.

Some students are required to complete community service as part of a class requirement in order to graduate from high school or become a member of certain organizations, such as the National Honour Society. Adults can also participate in community service as a way to help others or if they are ordered to do so by a judge. Community service is the activity performed by someone or a group of people for the benefits of a community.

Examples of Community Service: There are hundreds of ways to participate in community service, depending on your skills and interests. Some common community service examples include:

1. Working with school children by teaching them.

2. Care giving for senior citizens such as driving them to their doctors appointment, visiting them, cooking and cleaning up.

3. Cleaning of drainage so as to prevent flooding and to make the environment clean.

4. Construction of sign posts to indicate streets name.

5. Building community libraries.

6. Construction of bridges to link streets together from one area to another.

Importance of Community Service

1. Community service gives one the opportunity to help others; One of the good things to do is helping others. Community service gives us the opportunity to help ourselves, our community and the vulnerable or less-privileges in the community. Being selfless, kind and helping others is a good character to have as a personality. Participating in community service is a good thing to do.

2. It is a good means to instill sense of responsibility in people: Citizens are expected to have a sense civic of responsibility in order to develop their community and nation at large. Roles and responsibilities for nation building are expected to be carried out by both the government as well as the citizens. Community service is done to develop community and not to generate profit, but it helps to instill a sense of responsibility in people participating in community service. Community service requires a high sense of responsibility and commitment in order to make it effective, a person who's able to give his or her total commitment to a community service won't find it difficult to develop a sense of responsibility in other things they do.

3. It is an avenue to gain experience, acquire skills and learn about other careers while performing a community service: Community service create an avenue to network with others and develop a positive social capital. People from different areas, background, professions come together to form a non-profit organization in order to render community service. Community service enables the participants to gain experience, acquire some skills and learn about other careers while performing a community service. It is an avenue for getting members of a community to come together and create a bonding experience.

4. It promotes growth and development of the community: Community service is a selfless act rendered by some set of people who come together for the purpose of growth and development of their community. Community development is a community service and participants of community service look for a way to develop the community in which they find themselves which in turn promotes the growth and development of the community.

Community service is an avenue for citizens to participate in government and also creates a sense of unity and oneness.
