Did I plagiarize it? Let's deal with this once and for all

A lot of people seem to think that plagiarism is relatively new and harmless as well. They don’t realize that it can damage a writer’s chances of growing in the writing business they are hoping for. It can also create the impression that you lack the originality and talent that you claim to have as a result of copying from other sources and using them in your article without giving proper credits to the original author, which could cause your reputation to drop significantly. It can also prevent you from getting that big break in the writing job you’ve been hoping to get. It can even lead to cases of misconduct, rift, creating an atmosphere of disrespect among writers on a platform. Plagiarism is a serious offense and it can be treated as such anywhere. If you have no experience with plagiarism, you may think it’s a small matter, but this couldn’t be further from the truth.

What is plagiarism and how do you know you have committed it?

That's a million-dollar question I kept asking myself recently. What is plagiarism? How can you tell if you have plagiarized from an already existing material like Wikipedia, a book, or YouTube? The simple answer to this question lies in your integrity. If you find yourself doing or even thinking the following:

copying the text of a book or chapter and calling it your own.

making research observations that are not based on first-hand experience or real knowledge.

Falsifying a dubious piece of research as credible or true.

copying key phrases, rephrasing them, and identifying them as your own.

writing an article based on a second-hand source of ideas.

Basically, the plagiarism definition is broad enough to include pretty much anything that doesn't come from originality. The irony, of course, is that this definition includes a lot of things we can't do on Wikipedia.

It is common knowledge that there is no harm in any kind of re-writing of old texts or quoting somebody else's quotes in your work. Not only has it been seen in our society, but it has been well-known across the writing world. However, the problem is not copying, it is when a person tries to pass off his/her writing's as another writer by using their ideas, sources, citations, and vocabulary.

Plagiarism, as defined by Merriam-Webster, is "to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own use (another's production) without crediting the source.to commit literary theft present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source" especially for monetary profit or personal advantage.

Today, however, the widespread use of the Internet and social media make it possible to commit plagiarism through virtual means, for example, by copying another person's writing by using the person's words and views, representing in written form a movie without crediting the producer of such movie.

Another funny thing about plagiarism is that you can even plagiarize yourself, a common practice among many writers. Although this can sometimes be done unintentionally, yet it follows the same rules as with other forms of plagiarism.

You may think that you’re just a writer trying to write what you want to write. But once you start getting in the game, you’ll need to make sure that everything you do is what you truly believe.

Now let have a look at the types of plagiarism to ascertain your position and know how to avoid them.

Plagiarising authors

Plagiarising authors is a type of plagiarism where a writer takes all the work of another author and passes it on as his or her own. The other side of this type of plagiarism is when you get someone to write you an article and publish it as your job. That cheating and pure plagiarism.

This is a deliberate act and one of the worst forms of cheating, and it can have serious consequences.

Rephrasing of text from another source

Rephrasing of text means rewriting a piece of text in your own words. without quoting the source of those ideas.

Rephrasing others' words is not cheating as long as you state your sources correctly. However, rephrasing words from another source is cheating when you read the source and rewrite the main points as if they were your ideas.

A more worst case is when translating a piece of text from another language. This is a dubious way to cheat. If you have to translate a piece of text for your publication, you need to properly reference the source. Translation without a source is still cheating, as you are using someone else's ideas.

copy and paste

This is the most common plagiarism that everyone knows about, and needs no much explanation. You make a literal cheat when you directly copy any text from a source and paste it into your article. If the structure and plural of the words are the same as the original, then it means cheating, even if you remove or change a few words here and there.

If you want to use the author's direct words, you need to quote the source by placing the copied text in the quotation marks and including the text source.

Patchwork plagiarism

Patchwork plagiarism is also known as Mosaic plagiarism. This Involves the copying of phrases, paragraphs, and ideas from different sources and combining them to create a new article. This may include rephrasing roles while retaining many words and the same structure as the original.

This type of cheating requires more effort than simply copying and pasting a source, but some clever cheaters can easily do it.

Plagiarising yourself

This might seem funny to know, and maybe the first time you are reading about it. This is called self-plagiarism, a practice of reusing part of your older work or a job that you previously posted for publication. Although it is your work, it is considered dishonest to present your old article as brand new and you have already received credit for this work.

What’s worse is republishing an article you’ve already published as an opportunity to make more money with it without leaving a backlink to the original article. this is considered cheating.

Self-plagiarism can also occur if you use ideas, phrases, or information from your previous articles. The truth is that reusing old ideas and passages is no cheating on its own, but you should quote your previous work to make the background clear.

How to avoid all forms of plagiarism

If you are concerned about accidental plagiarism, you can use any of the free plagiarism checkers online before publishing your article. I recommend you use Grammarly which is a more accurate plagiarism detector than most other free checkers. You can also use smallseotolls.com, the software compares your document with sources and highlights any similarities or missing quotes.

This article is only a piece about plagiarism, to know more about the various types of plagiarism and how to avoid them, I recommend you check this link from which most of the information in this article was derived.

I like that a solution was given to avoid plagiarism because some people do not know that they are plagiarizing other people’s work.

Always include the source of anything you copied from other sites including your own work. Using plagiarism checker is really useful.

i do plagiarize myself.. lol..but as you mentioned, there's a need to reference the original one and I do so too.. so I am not sure if that is still considered plagiarism? reusing an old article seems like a negative thing but it is still my own work...

Many will strive hard to write by cracking their brain but some set of people will open their mouth widely ready to copy the sweat of someone.

This is called theft. It is not the one who goes to market of to someone's house to steal is called stealing.but this is is the stealing of the first order. Copying someone's work? Why can't you struggle to get yours done.?

Plagiarism is a punishable offense without begging n cause that fellow has used it for his own gain.

Plagiarism is a devil. It claims what does not belong to him. In the cause of writing and making insertions to swell your work, and as the writer you go to take what as been written or images, or wise saying that isn't your original creation is simple tagged plagiarism.

This art has made many writers go into extinction. Many have lost economic balance for work they have done and all credits goes to a thief of the intellectual material. However, we should always be sure not to be involved in any venture of taking what belongs to us. If we need to use some of those materials, the there is need to consult or source the location of the material before it is used. The act of copying what does not belong to you as it were yours is a crime that is culpable in any facet of the word.

This has been a big issue lately. But how can someone prove that content is original? There are many plagiarism checkers now making their content original.
.. And all information and words we are using are based on what we have learned from the past...from the expressions and thoughts we have learned from movies, books, music, etc..most especially from school.. And other people have learned the same thing as well. There are always similarities and probabilities in this world. We can't avoid the coincidences happening if our words are similar to what other people have used as well...how can you justify that then? Should we also include the name of the teacher who taught us about that? Lol. .just kidding..
Some people are just overthinking about this matter and reacting too much...

It's fun time in here, I wrote this to let some of us know how dip plagiarism is. If we have to judged ourselves by the findings in this article several top writers will find themselves in the corner. I don't judge anyone, no not publicly, even if I found a plagiarised content I simply point it out to the person if I can reach him or her or I walk away. My duty is to use my writing to instruct and teach and not to destroy anyone.

Yup, I know your point. .the current issue about this was just annoying especially when the accusers used bad words and degraded others.
They should handle things in a good way. . not in an aggressive way.

And you know what saddened us? It's when Mrs. J only believed and respected the decision of the admin. But when we were trying to explain to her that the content was not plagiarized. She did not believe us and only insisted and relied on the checker. Just because the content triggered her anxiety... We got her point, but she did not listen to our point.

What was that then? Is that because we are poor, imbeciles, dumb, and cheaters? As Mr. P. said.. Too much discrimination and racism here.

These two were respected and admired by many of us. But because of their abrupt decisions and unfair actions... Our admiration for them were gone.

Again . just like what I have said in my article. It's not the error that matters, it's how we respond to error that counts.

Anyway, there is nothing wrong with this article. And it's a good way to disseminate to everyone about this issue..
The problem is in those people judging and generalizing things...

Hi, my friend.

The trap is a resource that humans have used for millennia. Cheating and lies are intermingled, and from an ethical point of view, it is not correct. Well, based on the ethics I believe in. In these modern times, there is a current that supports relativism.

Now, for some time I have worried about plagiarism, and by reading you I relived in me the issue of originality. I wonder, who owns the ideas? In the end, they all start from a common trunk that we permanently build over time.

For example, how original is this comment? The language is not my invention, and also to transfer my thoughts (supposed) in Spanish to English requires software, which by the way, is not my invention.

In conclusion, what I want to say, although it is true that plagiarism is a detestable behavior of those who want to take advantage of the system with the minimum effort, it is no less true that there are extreme norms that prevent the development of the perspectives of ideas that they do not have to be original per se.

Currently, AIs are being developed that write whole texts from a sentence. These are probably the biggest plagiarists recreated by humanity.

My recommendation, not to copy and paste. Develop critical thinking. A great sage once said, there is nothing new under the sun.

PS: To avoid a problem with plagiarism with the paraphrasing of the quote that closes my comment. The idea is attributed to King Solomon and is recorded in the book Ecclesiastes in chapter 1, verse 9 in most existing Bibles. Although to be more exact, in the original text written in ancient Hebrew, as far as I know, the chapter and verse system had not been implemented).

Now, imagine having to cite every idea and thought that you have culturally acquired. Also, think for a moment, where did the wise Solomon get the ideas to write such a famous sentence?

Thank you my friend for your comments. The issue of plagiarism was causing a lot of Sparks in here lately, accusations and counter-accusation were flying all over the places, for that I took the pain to write, and the questions that I asked myself was who is a plagiarism? Where do we get our ideas from? I wanted to answer some of the people reactions to the issue but not to look offensive I have to write it this way.

Like you said, there's no originality anywhere in this world, and not in the writing business as well. Someone who read an information from another source went and read about it without citing the source wasn't judged as being plagiarised because we all know about the information shared. Then, another person write about personal experiences and they found 2% plagiarised content which might just be similarities in the work, for that the hell broke loose.

I wasn't comfortable with the way things were going on among some people here. And those who are pushing this are those who write on information sourced from online.

If there will be original content it can only be found with those who write from personal experiences. And again like you said there's nothing new.

Patchwork plagiarism was the one we used to do in our assignments back then in 100l in school until a lecturer reprimanded and told us about crediting sources appropriately.

It's a self-explanatory article!

I got many things cleared or me. Though in my opinion, re-publishing your own contents is alright, AS LONG AS there is an indication that it is re-published, and include the link of the original publication. I personally recommend too, that the writer use similar usernamessl across different platforms, so when "plagiarism" is detected, it would not create a big issue.

I wasn't familiar with the do and don't of writing even though I don't copy others' content and I try to be as original as possible.

It is a serious offense that can make a writer lose their credibility, I don't support that and I urge people to desist from it.

Plagiarism is a serious offence. As a writer, it is our responsibility to ensure that everything we publish is 100% plagiarism-free to avoid serious problems in the future.

Even if you're writing based on a personal experience. We should still check our work before publishing them.

Well said. You have stated it all. Plagiarism is intolerable and sometimes tricky. We must be careful about what we are writing. I know writers here that include plagiarism reports at the end of their articles. They must be being careful about the circulating accusations of plagiarism here. It's a good thing though a bit exaggerated in my opinion.
