Preparing for the position of junior programmer, you have certainly read a lot of tips on which programming language to choose to start with, how to position yourself, what applications to make, but rarely anyone will tell you how to actually do the job.

Simon Holdorf has been working as a programmer for a long time and passes on his knowledge to young people to help them cope more easily with the new job they have chosen. He shared some tips for juniors who are just starting out, and we pass them on to those who chose this invitation as their own.

Appreciate yourself

Remember that companies need you, not you. In western countries, developers charge a lot for their services, which often leads foreign clients to turn to the eastern market, including Serbia.

In the case of programming, this does not mean that you will have to lower the price of your work in the local market, but that you will continue to earn more than others, and you will be charged less than foreigners.

Never lower your price due to customer needs. Thus, in the beginning, you will lose not only your credibility, but also your reputation and enthusiasm to finish the job well.

Invest wisely in your education

Dedicate yourself to your education and do not try to learn as much as possible in a short time. Consider all the options and choose one that offers you knowledge that is structured and grouped so that you acquire all the necessary skills and that allows you to learn to think like a programmer.

Not every educational program will allow you to do that, but the best ones will certainly offer everything you need - work on real projects with the help of modern equipment under the guidance of a mentor. It’s just up to you to make the most of it.

In your free time, read, practice and work independently. Do not wait for a job to have the opportunity to work, but create a project for yourself to improve your knowledge.

Don't stay in bad places

Never think that your current job is the best and the only option you have. Keep in mind that all IT companies appreciate quality developers and that the need for such staff is always current.

If the current company does not suit you for some reason, you feel like you are under pressure, the team is not good, there is no good energy, then change it - without waiting.

You always work "from the side"

Independent projects that you will do outside of work and to which you will dedicate time are the best way to improve. At first, these projects will not bring you too much money, but the experience you will gain is invaluable.

So don’t turn down opportunities that come your way outside of work. You never know when a project may turn into a serious business.

Fix your profile on LinkedIn

Reputation building is an indispensable part of every developer's job. Someone can only know that you are a great programmer if they meet you or come to your CV in some way.

That is why promotion on LinkedIn is a great solution. A huge number of job offers reach developers this way. So take the time to edit and update your profile regularly.

Don't be ashamed to ask a question

Always ask when you don't know something. Be curious, even when you become an experienced programmer.

At the beginning of your career, it is especially important to forget about vanity. Dedicate yourself to developing your knowledge, not competing with others.

When you have a senior "at hand", bury him with questions that bother you and try to find answers to them as you know and can.

Learn how

First of all, you have to take a zero step. Choose the right educational program that will feed you with all the information you need. By now you have realized that these are not short courses of several months. Commitment to learning, improvement and the will to become better are necessary. So to begin with, dedicate at least a year during which you will study, work and ask everything you want from experienced mentors who have been in this business for years.

I hope these secrets will help you. Thank you for reading this article. Regards to all. Don't forget to subscribe by liking and commenting on this article. Thanks :)
