Hiroo Onoda was an intelligence officer of the Imperial Japanese Army who was sent on a mission to Lubang Island in the Philippines on 26 December 1944. When the American and Filipino troops took over the island in 1945, most of his comrades either surrendered or were killed. ⠀
⠀
Onoda hid in the mountains with three other Japanese officers. Together, they conducted guerrilla warfare and engaged in several shootouts with the locals and the police. They saw leaflets informing them that the war had already ended but they doubted the claim and thought it was propaganda from the Allied forces.⠀
⠀
One of the Japanese holdouts surrendered to the Filipino forces in 1950. Two others were killed separate clashes in 1954 and 1972. Onoda held out until 1974 when he met his former commanding officer who relieved him from his military duties. When he surrendered on 11 March, he was suspected of killing 30 people. As he believed that the war was still ongoing, he was pardoned by President Ferdinand Marcos.⠀
⠀
Similarly, the last Japanese holdout was Private Teruo Nakamura who was arrested in Indonesia on 18 December 1974.⠀
