Narcisa, or Sisa, is the deranged mother of Basilio and Crispín. Described as beautiful and young, although she loves her children very much, she cannot protect them from the beatings of her husband, Pedro. After both of her sons went missing, Sisa went insane, wandering around town while searching for them.
Sisa suffered many abuses and hardships in her life from her husband, civilian guardians and Dona Consolacion. He married a lazy and heartless man addicted to gambling. Sisa is a submissive woman, unable to stand up to her abusive husband. It seems that Sisa's behavior is wrong. Yes, Sisa was a strong woman who endured everything for her family, but for me I could not afford to endured everything. I don't want to be weak, slave, trampled or not able to fight. I don't want to be stupid just because of loving a wrong person and I don't want to be crazy at the fact that I can't fight for myself.
Sisa's life is a reflection of the pressure women experience at the hands of men. This is reflected in the mistreatment of her husband and the treatment of her as a domestic servant whose sole purpose is to make her happy and to care for her child. As a woman you will sometimes experience abuses at work and in society . Because of the idealism that women are “inferior” compared to the men planted by the Spaniards in our society, many Filipinos still experience oppression and unfair treatment. Nowadays women should be able to defend themselves against men or oppressed men. It does not mean that if you are a woman you are weak, we must show that we are equal in this world, that we are strong and fight for our rights.
