We Filipinos are known all over the world for being naturally cheerful no matter how serious the problem we are carrying we get to smile and laugh.
Even in small things we Filipinos become happy and in fun things or events we definitely laugh. Some even fall into the chair with too much laughter and others even drop their dentures.
But did you know that pure laughter is not always fun?
Because sometimes the cause of loud and relentless laughter is death for others. Just like the people we will feature in this article who died due to excessive laughter.
ZEUXIS
A well-known painter from Ancient Greece in the 5th Century B.C.E. According to history, Zeuxis was hired or commissioned by an old woman to paint a Greek Goddess Aphrodite.
According to the story, this old woman instructed him to paint the Greek goddess according to her liking and painting style and she even allegedly presented to model for the painting to be made.
And when Zeuxis finished his work, he started laughing at his painting because of the outcome of a goddess of Beauty with an old look and his relentless laughter at his painting also caused his death.
OLE BENTZEN
An audiologist from Denmark. Ole died while watching a 1988 comedy movie titled A FISH CALLED WANDA. According to the story, a Joke from the movie sold him too much which caused my 250 to 500 Beats per minute to reach his heart rate so that he had a cardiac arrest which caused him to be killed by breath.
WESLEY PARSONS
He is an old farmer from Laurel in Indiana, USA. It is said that while Wesley was chatting and joking with his friends he laughed non-stop for an hour until he started kicking. And after two hours he also died of exhaustion from laughter and hiccups. Some of the suspected causes of his death caused by relentless laughter are Cardia Rapture, Collapse Lung, Asthma Attack and Raptured Aneurysm.
ALEX MITCHELL
In 1975, Alex Mitchell died of relentless laughter for twenty-five minutes. This is while watching his favorite TV show. Alex is a British bricklayer from Kingslin Norfolk in the U.K. One of his favorite shows on their television is the comedy show THE GOODIES.
According to his wife Nessie while Alex was watching an episode titled Kung Fu Capers Alex started laughing non-stop for 25 minutes until he died. This death of Alex became popular and talked about. That is why her husband wrote in the program The Goodies to express his gratitude because they made Alex happy until his last moments.
MANGESH BOGAL
One of the latest records of the incident of death due to laughter occurred just this year 2013 in Mumbai City in India and this person is Mangesh Bogal. It is said that while Mangesh was watching the screening of a movie titled Grandmasti with his girlfriend he suddenly laughed out loud because of a joke in the movie and did not stop until he had a stroke. Mangesh was rushed to the nearest hospital but according to doctors, he died at the age of 22 before he was finally admitted.
And here is our list of five people who died of relentless laughter. So always remember that we always laugh slowly so that the saying of our Filipinos does not become literal to us "There seems to be no tomorrow to laugh."
