Are Science and Technology Dangerous?

Science's main goal is to produce more accurate explanations of how the natural world works, what its components are, and how the world got to be the way it is now.

The goal of science is the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake while the goal of Technology is to create products that solve problems and improve human life.

Therefore, Technology is the practical application of Science. However, there is a question that needs to be answered:

"Are Science and Technology dangerous?"

I stand with the point of view that Science itself is not dangerous. Science is all about knowledge and understanding and Technology is all about making things. Thus, dangers and ethical issues only arise when Science is applied in Technology. Though it is undeniable that through Science we acquire dangers and fears that we get from Technology.

Science has reduced the suffering felt by millions of people such as those helped by the increased efficiency of agriculture and medicine. Science has helped the human race to live a more convenient life where things are done easier and faster.

It is said that it is easy to be negative about Science if it does not affect your actions. Yet, society is the number one patron of the products of Technology, such as cellular phones and computers that involve using Social Media Sites.

There are cons in every pro, negatives in every positive, and consequence in every action. I acknowledge the dangers but I nurture the openness of scientific investigation. I, too, stand by the distinction between knowledge of the world and how it is used.

"One should not abandon the possibility of doing good by applying some scientific idea because one can also use it to do bad."

I am against the products of Science and Technology that overpower the morality and ethics of the human code. Eugenics or the science of improving the human stock by giving the more suitable races or strains of blood a better chance of prevailing speedily over the less suitable is one of those examples that I do not agree with because Scientists are already playing like Gods. Thus, Scientists should also perform their obligation to make their ideas reliable, and should not abuse their role as providers and interpreters of complex and difficult phenomena.

Over usage of knowledge acquired from Science is dangerous. It is the people who use the benefits given by Science that make it dangerous. However, it is also up to them, if only Science and Technology are both used in socially responsible ways, dangers, negative and harmful effects on society and the environment might be eliminated. If only people recognize that individual responsibility is the first step on the path to peace, misuse, and abuse of Science and Technology will never be a problem.

If we look deeply into it, Science and Technology are just giving us the freedom to discover the world, which I think is not dangerous. It is still in the people’s hands to make this advantageous activity into a disastrous one if they are too abusive of it.

Hence, we should be more responsible in using this knowledge to improve and have a better quality of life.
