What's Right and What's Wrong
From the beginning, no matter the race, religion or country, we are being told to be ethical, to learn to differentiate between right and wrong. And when we ask what "Ethics" means, again, we are provided with the same old definitions like; "Set of beliefs about right and wrong behaviour within a society".
But have you ever wondered what exactly "Right" and "Wrong" means? In other words, what is "Right", what is "Wrong", and most importantly, how do we know that something that was "right" for one situation is also going to be "right" for another as well?
Well, in this article, that's what we are going to discuss.
So let's start
The concept of right and wrong is not that simple. It can be confusing at times. Because sometimes things cannot be as clear as crystal, you can't just classify something simply as right or wrong because there are chances that something that you think is Right for you is Wrong for someone else, and similarly, something that is Right for someone else is Wrong for you.
That is why nothing except for some common "Wrongs" like murder, theft, bribery and, some Widespread "Right's" like generosity, loyalty, justice can be pre-classified as "Right" or "Wrong". In fact, based on your moral values and ethical norms, you are to decide what's wrong and what's right.
In the dilemma of right and wrong, you might face another complex situation where there are no "Wrongs", only "Right's", and maybe vice versa. Well, In that case, you cannot just declare something as completely wrong or right; In fact, you would have to pick the Better Right between all the "Right's" and the Least Problematic Wrong between all the Wrongs. Yeah yeah, I know, Seems pretty weird and confusing. But that's how it is.
We are always told to do the right thing but never told how to pick the "right" in complex situations where sometimes, not even a single option is wrong or vice versa. That's the whole reason most of us who are even willing to do the right thing end up making choices that lead them to severe consequences.
What leads us to wrong decisions and unexplainable actions is our lack of knowledge and experience as "ethics and moral values" are no longer valued as they were before.
Steps to improve the situation:
We must raise awareness about the importance of "Ethics and moral values".
It should be a core course in institutions all over the world. Because, Nowadays, most institutions don't offer these courses, and even if they do, they are in the elective category.
Note: I never said that not even a single institution has this course as compulsory; I used the word "Most".
Making it compulsory in institutions will help the coming generation in many ways for example;
Decision making
Controlling their actions
Being responsible
Conclusions: "Ethics and moral values" is one of the main factors that differentiate us, humans, from animals. In other words, it is our legacy, and if we lose it, we will lose our purpose in this world. As it plays a significant role in our lives, it must never be considered useless.
