Did you know that a cat can jump up to six times its height? Just look at some of the most interesting facts about cats ...

Not only have cats almost completely preserved their habits and instincts, even though they have been with humans for a long time, but their anatomy and development of senses still fascinate their owners and fans, as well as scientists. Here are some interesting facts you may not have known about cats:

1. Cats can jump up to six times their height

Did you know about the paradox that the higher the height from which cats fall (jump down), the lower the chances of their injury? In their ancestors, this gymnastics encouraged the evolution of the system located in the inner ear, which enables control and balance of the body.

2. The largest cat in the world weighs 14 kilograms and is an incredible 120 centimeters long

Cat Omar caught attention when his owner from Melbourne, Steffi Hirst, posted a photo of him on an account that specializes in cat photos. The huge cat weighs 14 kilograms and eats raw kangaroo meat for dinner.

3. The oldest cat recorded in history was 38 years old

The absolute record holder in terms of age was the cat Cream Puff from Texas, who lived an impressive 38 years.

4. Cats can run up to 50 km / h

If necessary, cats can be faster than Usain Bolt. They are capable of very precise gait because they can precisely feel that the place where the front paw is located directly coincides with the place of the back paw, which reduces noise.

5. Cats can be "left-handed" and "right-handed"

Cats have a dominant paw, just as in humans it is the right or left hand. Most females use the right paw, while males mostly use the left.

6. Cats spend 70 percent of their time sleeping

This means that a cat about nine years old spends only about three years awake. However, cats rarely sleep soundly, or more precisely, most of the time they actually doze off, and their deep sleep lasts only a few minutes.

7. The cat's brain is more similar to the human brain than the dog's

Cats are very intelligent animals, but mostly do not show their emotions.

8. The strongest sense in cats is the sense of hearing

Cats can hear high-frequency sounds and therefore they surpass both the dog and the human. Cat's earlobes can rotate 180 degrees, making them very mobile.

9. Cats change the sound of their meowing depending on the situation

Cats meow for many reasons - from serious ones to just to get attention. Among the most common causes are: hunger, seeking attention, loneliness, stress, old age, illness ...

10. It has not been proven why cats spin

There are numerous assumptions that cats send signals of reconciliation in this way and in some way express a desire to eliminate someone's aggression. Also, they can spin when something hurts them, thus trying to alleviate their pain.

11. They have hundreds of thousands of hairs on just a few inches of skin

The cat's body is covered with an average of about 52,000 hairs per square centimeter.

12. The smallest cat breed in the world is the Singapore cat

It is an extremely rare breed known for its fur color. The Singapore cat was declared the national treasure of Singapore in 1991. This breed reaches its full size only at the age of two. The average weight is about 2.7 kilograms - males, or 1.8 kilograms of females.

13. Cats sweat through their paws

Cats sweat a little through their paws, but mostly rely on the evaporation of saliva on their fur to maintain a normal body temperature. Fur licking regulates one third of the cooling process.

14. They have a built-in GPS

Many cats know how to find their way home. Many experts explain this in various ways - from being guided by sunlight to the Earth's magnetic fields. However, there are a large number of recorded cases in which cats have traveled an incredible number of kilometers to return home to the owner.

15. The oldest breed of cat is the Egyptian Mau cat

Every connoisseur and lover of ancient Egypt associates the very name of this breed of cat with the land of the pyramids and the time when the cat was considered a sacred animal. "Mau" in Egyptian means cat, and this breed, according to recent research, dates back to the time of Ancient Egypt. The genetic codes of cat mummies found in Egypt correspond to the genetic code of the Egyptian mau cat, which was proved by the British zoologist Morrison Scott.

Domestic cats, no matter their breed, are all members of one species.

Relationship with Humans

Felis catus has had a very long relationship with humans. Ancient Egyptians may have first domesticated cats as early as 4,000 years ago. Plentiful rodents probably drew wild felines to human communities. The cats' skill in killing them may have first earned the affectionate attention of humans. Early Egyptians worshipped a cat goddess and even mummified their beloved pets for their journey to the next world—accompanied by mummified mice! Cultures around the world later adopted cats as their own companions.

Hunting Abilities

Like their wild relatives, domestic cats are natural hunters able to stalk prey and pounce with sharp claws and teeth. They are particularly effective at night, when their light-reflecting eyes allow them to see better than much of their prey. Cats also enjoy acute hearing. All cats are nimble and agile, and their long tails aid their outstanding balance.

Communication

Cats communicate by marking trees, fence posts, or furniture with their claws or their waste. These scent posts are meant to inform others of a cat's home range. House cats employ a vocal repertoire that extends from a purr to a screech.

Diet

Domestic cats remain largely carnivorous, and have evolved a simple gut appropriate for raw meat. They also retain the rough tongue that can help them clean every last morsel from an animal bone (and groom themselves). Their diets vary with the whims of humans, however, and can be supplemented by the cat's own hunting successes.

Iako nisam ljubitelj mački saznala sam dosta informacija o njima.
