Las Las School Na Scam
Note:- The title simply says in English 'In the end school is a fraudulent activity'.
It's the last day of January and the first day of another working week, today while I was running about trying to catch up with lectures and struggling to pay attention in a really congested lecture theatre.
I was seated at the back so I couldn't hear a thing the lecturer was saying and my mind began to wonder, "What's the point of all this stress?". I began to question the whole point of seating down under this stress and be expected to understand the topic.
I'm an engineering student of a Nigerian Federal University, currently I'm in 3rd year and by the end of this year, I'll be in final year. The stress of going to a public university in Nigeria is more than enough, coupled with the uncertainty that lies after graduation, you then begin to wonder what's the point.
A while ago, I think late last year, there was a video that circulated in which the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari stated clearly that there was no jobs anywhere waiting, he said that the Public sector was full to the brim and there no vacancies. This was the same man who pledged to significantly reduce the rate of unemployment in the nation.
This is very worrisome, each academic year, universities and polytechnics admit close to 2 million students and produce about 600,000 graduates. The number of youths out there looking for jobs is growing every year, there are many first-class degree holders out there with no jobs.
These days it's hard to even get space in companies to complete the 6 months industrial training (IT), there are very few private owned firms and companies when you compare them to the massive amount of applicants.
In Warri, Delta State, there's an increasing number of yahoo boys (internet fraudsters) as a result of losing faith in the purpose of education. Some are students, others are graduates and yet they believe in one thing "school na scam" as they don't see the point of wasting time getting an education.
It's not easy to be serious with this education with the future uncertain, but this is not supposed to be so. The thing is that quality education needs proper funding from the Government, lack of adequate funding simply means students and lecturers have to make do with limited or, in some cases, no resources to carry out learning. The direct implication is evident in the quality of education delivered in tertiary institutions.
Reports have stated that, Nigeria’s education budget is currently below UNESCO’s recommendation of 15%-20%. This means that the public universities are underfunded and which will definitely lead to a low quality of graduates.
In my opinion, another thing that makes it really hard to get jobs is that most graduates are actually unemployable. It's funny but very true, what's being taught in the university is very much outdated compared to what is being used today, there needs to be an improvement in the school curriculum so that it will match the relevant skills in demand and jobs available both within and outside the country.
In the picture below you can see how the employment rate is so low during Buhari's tenure.
You can see what this so called president Said in the video below.
Finally, I believe that self development is very important in this situation, one has to find ways to move past the things being taught and find out for yourself what demands the world is placing on you. There's really no time to wait for the Government to fix things, you might very well wait forever. It's the extra bits and skills that really count after school to make it big.
