What is a Sports, Entertainment or Death sentence? I’m just curious.

For ages and since the beginning of the world, sports have been in existence in different styles and shapes. As the world began to evolve and develop in all ramifications sports was not left out. The world of sports has witnessed a tremendous increase both in human participant level and in its style of performance but there seems to be a serious shift from what sports was meant to be. If you are a sports lover, of course, I believe that a lot of people love sports more than movies i.e. when I say sports, I am talking in a general term and not a particular kind of sports.

You may not be a lover of football or swimming but you will find out that you are in tune with wrestling as a sporting event. This is why you will always notice that you give more attention to one form of sports or the other. For those who have gotten so in tune with sports so much that they have fallen so deeply in love with anything sports, I congratulate you all and I want you all to join me as I discuss what I have tagged “Death Sentence in Sports”.

What is Sports?

I will not go into a deeper explanation or the dictionary meaning of what sports are but I will like to drop this excerpt just for us to have a clearer understanding of what sports are.

Excerpt; “Sport (or sports) is all forms of usually competitive physical activity which, through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills while providing entertainment to participants, and in some cases, spectators”… source

I believe you have read through the above excerpt over and over again just to have an understanding of what I am about to discuss in this article. In the above definition of the word sports or sport, one will not be wrong to say that sports have two major purposes which are;

·        For the improvement of one’s physical abilities and mental well being.

·        For entertainment both for the competitors and the spectators or audience.

If sports are meant to help develop the physical abilities of a person, usually the participant, then it won’t be wrong for me to say that the sports events we have in the world today have not failed in that area. But I will say otherwise when it comes to the area of entertainment because you and I know that in the world of sports today there are sporting events that are more deadly than coronavirus and any deadly virus one can think of. Don’t get me wrong. What I am saying categorically is that there is some sort of sporting events that do not truly carry the entertainment side of sports to both the competitor and the spectators. Examples of such sports are:

·        Kickboxing

·        Boxing

·        Ultimate Fight Championship (UFC), to mention but a few.

I believe that there are a whole lot of other extreme sporting events which has gradually erased that entertainment aspect of sports especially on the side of the participants.

How can we comfortably sit and watch where two men or women are busy bursting their heads, eyes and even nose open with killer blows or kick and we say it is sports. I cannot forget the day I saw a video clip of two men fighting in the UFC main event and in the course of the fight, one of the fighters tried to kick his opponent on the leg as a way of getting him off balance but he ended up breaking his shin bone into two. When I saw this I could not believe my eyes that someone will comfortably set himself in harm’s way all in the name of sports. At that moment, I began to ask myself;

·        What is entertaining about this sort of sport?

·        Why should the world allow this kind of wicked fighting that can take someone’s life in just a twinkle of an eye?

These two questions have led me into writing this post today because I believe we should be able to tell our children why we allowed such kinds of sports to be in existence.

If we agree that sports should be a bringer of entertainment both to the spectators and the participants, can we say the same thing to these extreme sports that have taken over the world? I remembered the time when animal fighting was going on as a form of sport in different parts of the world. These animals were meant to fight for the spectators who were humans who usually use these animals as a means of gambling and entertainment. When the world government looked at the conditions surrounding these animal sports, they made some kind of forceful changes in a bid to stop the killings and mutilations of these innocent animals. Although there are still places in the world today where the animal fight is still ongoing, I believe that the reason why this kind of sport was banned was to protect the lives of animals. This singular reason leaves me with this question; is the world saying that animals are better and more important than humans?

Since it became an important task in the world for everyone to come together and say no against extreme animal sports, why is it so hard for the world to put a stop on these human extreme sports which has claimed the lives of many both men and woman? I am seeing a future where our children will be forced to embrace these extreme sports and by then, there will be little or nothing that anyone can do to change the situation. This is the right time for the world to have a more focused look at the world of sports to sweep off those extreme sports before it becomes the end of our children in years to come. Is sport used as a tool for entertainment or a Death sentence? We must try to find an answer to this pertinent and urgent question. I cannot say more than I have said already therefore I beg to end this post here.

Thank you for reading and commenting as always.

I do not support what we wrongly call sport, I accept wrestling because it is imitation and it is all prepared, although I do not like them. There are other sports that are extreme that raise adrenaline, like climbing a mountain, but they also take lives. I also do not support sports where there is animal abuse.

We have really neglected what true sports and it us one of the reasons we are suffering today.

It amazes me too when I see some kind of weird sports where humans beat themselves to pulp like it doesn't matter. Taking time to see the origin of sports, one would see that some of the combative sports was first set for slaves to entertain their masters before it later was incorporated into the conventional sports.

You are right... What this means is that slavery is still very on in our world today. May God help us.

Sports have an old history as death sentence. Sentenced to death in old Rome, for instance, could end you up in the arena with impossible odds - fighting other humans or wild animals until you died. For the entertainment of the populace, of course.

In my opinion, the presence of these cruel sports is a sign of cultural decline. We today live in a world of collapsing and dying global civilization. Globalisation thrives, but civilization is dying. We can see other signs of that as well. (Don't think that is discernible from day to day, it is a long and slow process, taking centuries in total.)

Hmmm... What it means is that we are still reliving the past lives and experiences of the old even when we claim that we are civilized.

Oh yes. And we are not more or less civilized than people of past cultures. It's just the face of Barbary that changes. We accept things they would have never accepted, and they accepted things we would never accept, but that is just a matter of what you are used to and familiar with.

Or it is just a matter of how we call something. They had slavery, we have not... or do we? It is just the word that is not applied to modern slavery, yet the average man today is bound to a slavery of the state, which is far beyond what they would have accepted only 100 years ago.

There are many sports in the world that are too rough and life-threatening and yet they still allow them. They do the same as when they sell cigarettes. Putting a note with very small letters saying that smoking is bad for your health. They do the same with those extreme sports. Somewhere they say they injure but they don't care. Money is money.

There are a lot of things going wrong in the world today and yet no one seems to care.

It goes to say how different we view things are. What we thought is okay may not be for others. I don't understand also why do we call hurting each other sports? What's so sporty in that? As I've said, we all have our own reasons.

You have given me another vital point on this topic... "Why do we call hurting each sport"... This is a great question that requires an answer.
