Are you sure you understand how it works?

Every day of our life we are faced with scenarios where our knowledge of a particular thing is questioned and most times it turns out to be that we do not truly have a good knowledge of the thing. Most times it sounds embarrassing when someone who is either a friend or a stranger asks us such questions publicly not minding how it might make us feel, but the truth of it all is that we are the reason why such questions are thrown at us. How would you explain to someone that you do not know how to operate a mobile phone or that you do not understand what a mobile phone is? Before you shake your head to say that you understand what I am saying, make sure not to miss any line because you might be surprised to know that this article is not what you thought it to be.

Are you sure you understand how it works?

This was the very question I asked her the moment I set my eyes on her. I could see confusion written all over her face because she wanted to understand what I meant and why I was asking her such a question as soon as we met. There are times you get so confused about why people behave or act in a certain manner which will make you not let a minute pass by without throwing those questions running through your mind at them. That was exactly the case scenario because I could not wait a minute without asking her why she has always not answered her calls whenever I call her. You and I know that the mobile phone was manufactured to make life easier in a way that you wouldn’t have to travel so far or wait for the postmasters to deliver a message for you rather you could stay in the comfort of your house, office, school, car and anywhere at all to place a call or send the message through your mobile phone as long as you have network coverage. It is very surprising how we are beginning to lose the essence of the mobile phone because of some personal reasons which I think should be looked at in a way to strike a balance.

Reasons and courtesy

One of the greatest challenges of handling a mobile phone is the ability to have a balance between Reason and Courtesy.

Mind you, the thoughts and views in this article are all experiences gathered from the time I started using a mobile phone to date therefore any resemblance of thought should not be seen as plagiarism.

If you are yet to understand the flow of this post then I would help you by asking this question; why do we put our mobile phones in a silent mood? If you must know, this article was inspired by a friend’s attitude towards answering his calls whenever he is called. In other to do justice to this post, I would try to outline those reasons why someone might choose to place their mobile phone in a silent mood.

Reasons

I had to ask this question to some random persons and this was what they had to say;

·        I place my mobile phone on silent anytime I’m in the office.

·        The only time I put my mobile phone on silent mode is when I am in the church or I will just switch it off entirely.

·        I hate it when unknown or unsaved numbers call me, so I just place my mobile phone on steady silent mode… you are surprised, right?

·        For me, I put my mobile phone on silent mode anytime I want to rest or sleep, I can just switch it off sometimes.

·        Putting my mobile phone on silent mode is something I don’t usually do except if I am in the office, meeting or the church just for courtesy sake.

If you observed their responses very well, you will understand that there was person’s who silent their mobile phones as a way to avoid unknown calls, rest and of course for courtesy sake. But there is one thing most people forget which is why it seems like we are throwing away the essence of the mobile phone.

When you keep your mobile phone on silent mode all day, you are indirectly saying that you do not understand what a mobile phone stands for. The first you must understand is that it is called a Mobile Phone, which means that you should be able to answer your calls at all times unless when at work, in a meeting, in the church or when any other tangible reason comes into play. A lot of people still treat the mobile phone the very same way they treat their landline phones. Recently, the types of smartphones that are being manufactured today are designed in a way that you can give a special ringtone to a particular mobile number or you can also block or bar any mobile from calling you. Some of these smartphones have great features which can dictate or expose the identity of any unknown mobile number that calls you. What does this mean? It means that silencing your mobile phone just because you do not want an unknown mobile number to call you will place every other contact on your mobile phone at risk of not getting through to you any time.

I had to tell my friend how bad it feels for you not to answer someone’s call anytime they call you. The person calling you might take it to be that you are avoiding them or that you do not want to answer their calls irrespective of the reasons you may have, courtesy demands that you should not miss peoples calls regularly except on a proper arrangement where you have been able to make to understand that your daily schedule.

I ask you today; do you put your mobile phone on silent, if your answer is yes, what is your reason for doing that? Let us not kill the essence by which the Mobile Phone is manufactured with our carelessness. The truth is that when people notice that you do not answer your calls whenever they call you, they will naturally withdraw from calling you. Always apply courtesy in all that you do.

I am one of those who place the phone on silent mode when in church, at the office and when I don't want to answer calls. In fact, I put it on silent mode almost all the time but in vibrate mode. I don't get to receive calls though these days as most people call via messenger already... if i do receive a call, its from.someone who's offering services

The volume of my phone is always on silent too. I have it for me not to please salesman or join whatever they have in mind. Those I know and know me will text me and know I will answer. I do the same with them and do not waste their time or cross their privacy with chit chats.

I put my phone on vibration mode, not silent and set up an auto response when I'm unable to pick the call. But yes, I ignore calls from some people I don't wanna talk to🤣

You are doing the right thing, good friend.. Instead of putting the phone on silent, it is better to put it on vibration.

I think it depends on individual preferences. Sometimes when we want to disconnect, we resort to switching our phones off😊

This is true. It's not a sin to make enquiries about what you don't know. I could remember when I didn't know how to operate an ATM, I made enquiries and thank God I was answered appropriately.

Many don't know how to operate the phone but find it difficult to ask how.

I'm guilty. But i can't help it. Even if my phone isn't on silent i don't pick all calls, even that of numbers saved on my phone. I off my WhatsApp read receipt too.

Sometimes i just want to hibernate and be alone. Another reason for this is that i know reasons why must of them are calling and I'm not ready to deal with that. A text message still have higher chances of being replied than a call .

But you know it would be better to put the phone on vibration instead of silencing it completely... It's your phone and I believe you know what is best...

That is reality i don't pick calls most of time. I only pick my family calls on time. When i am busy and someone call me i feel like have gun and shot him/her. But this is not good behavior 🥺

I hardly put my phone on silent because I don't have any reason to do so and I also quarrel with people that don't pick calls.

I guess someone must have done so to you... We are gradually letting go of the essence.

I'm so guilty with this. I always put my phone in a silent mode. I had many cases that I can't answer some calls because I didn't notice. There was one time that my aunt called me to ask favor if I could buy medicine for her daughter, but I didn't notice the call since my phone was in a silent mode and I just put it in my bag. I felt so bad at that time. But I think I haven't learned my lesson because until now, my phone is still always on silent.

So how would you feel if someone should do the same thing to you? It will be nice if you can applying courtesy to it.

A mobile phone is meant so the owner can call in case of need not to be available 24/7 and answer it always. These days people have hardly values and norms. They do not respect your privacy. They do not respect you like to eat with you family in peace without being disturbed. They do not respect you do not call people after 8 p.m. They call and keep calling and even your work does.

A mobile phone is meant for you and you have the right to switch it off. Year's ago people in Japan already complained and left their phone in the subway because it caused stress to always be available. A mobile phone shouldn't rule your life. It's unhealthy.

It's rude to not respect others. It's also rude to answer your phone in public or if you spend time with others.

If it comes to family and friends... Their number shows in your phone which means you know who called. Besides if they can call they can leave your a message too if it's really that urgent.

The idea and thoughts I outline in this post were based on experiences I gathered since I began to make use of the mobile phone. One of the major reasons why the mobile phone was manufactured is for convenience and accessibility. Now, if we decide to place too many restrictions on the handling, then the essence will be defeated. If you had read the post very well you will understand that I was trying to point out that we can strike a balance between courtesy and reasons.
