Declaration of Matriculation open by the Provost

 The Provost Matriculation Speech:

His speech;Distinguished Ladies and gentlemen, you will agree with me that  Matriculation is indeed an important ceremony in the life of every tertiary institution, the world over.  It is a day set aside to consummate the process of admitting students into tertiary institution.  Today’s Matriculation Ceremony is very important not only because it marks the formal admission of these freshmen and women into the College, but because, it is the occasion during which they will pledge their allegiance to the authority of the College, by being enjoined, through the administration of the Matriculation Oath, to be obedient to Constituted Authority of the College. In pledging to be of good behaviour, they shall commit themselves to avoid indiscipline and disorderliness as well as to peaceful living as members of the College community for the duration of their time as students. In other words, this matriculation will confer on the matriculants, full membership of this College having fulfilled all necessary requirements.

After this ritual is performed today, every matriculated student shall be entitled to all rights and privileges appertaining to full students’ membership recognized by the College authority.  Such rights include, but not limited to: inclusion of the students in the College Register, obtaining the college identity card, right to access information in the library, representing the College at different fora, participate in SRC activities and enjoyment of all other available teaching and learning facilities in the College.

On the other hand, as full members of the College community, it is part of your obligations to maintain law and order, pay your school fees and other levies, protect the College properties, respect the rights of your fellow students, report any criminal activities to the College authority, keep lecture rooms clean, among others.  It is my hope therefore, that your conduct throughout your stay in the College will be guided by these obligations.

At this juncture, let me use this opportunity to enjoin you to shun all forms of social vices such as cultism, sexual misbehaviour, indecent dressing, examination malpractices, thuggery, 419, Militancy, Kidnapping, fraudulent acts and other nefarious activities as all these are highly probable to mar your future.

Today, Nigeria and the world at large are infested with so many social vices; and it is also worrisome that our youths have lost the virtues of hard work, honesty, punctuality and sense of morality in general.  It is an irony that all these are happening in a country that has been described as the most religious country in the world.  The conclusion one can draw from this irony is that most of the agencies of socialization have failed in their duty of molding the character of our youth who have been made idle because good number of admittable secondary school leavers in Nigeria comes from a poor background and cannot further their education due to poverty and other related factors thereby forcing a good number of them to look for alternative sources of livelihood like those social vice mentioned earlier.

What a Pity! The questions now are; should our traditional complacencies of sitting on the fence continue? Must we watch well-meaning Nigerians with wonderful intellectual abilities fallow into nothingness and huge waste? Must we allow this ugly alternative survival strategies evolved by our youth continue to win convert for exhibition of cruelty? Pan African College of Education answer to these disturbing questions is NO! We believe that the Spirit of our traditional complacency must stop and that all hands must be on deck to face this cankerworm head-on.

In this connection, in order to contribute our own quota in addressing these challenges, Pan African College of Education has chosen to rededicate itself not only to provide training in Teachers’ Education, but also to mold the character of her students, so that they can become assets to their families, communities, and the country at large through exemplary life styles, moral suasion and rigorous but rewarding moral training. In impacting meaningfully on this resolve, the college has launched a Tuition Free Scholarship Programme for One Thousand Candidate as part of it corporate Social Responsibility for 2020/2021 academic Session. Beneficiaries of this programme will be expected to pay only other fees on the Fee Schedule during the course of undertaking their studies at the college.

I would like to admonish all matriculating students, to avoid all forms of violent fighting on campus. Violence needless to say is pernicious.  It brings nothing but destruction or annihilation. And as a College, our stand on violent fighting is unequivocal- outright dismissal from the College.  Rather than resorting to violence, there are different loci of authorities you can explore to resolve any disagreement or dispute amicably. Our doors (management, academic and support staff) are open to you at all times.

My dear Freshmen and Women, as you officially start the next stage of your educational career, I would like you understand that in front of you, is a long winding road; you will find several tremendous opportunities, experiences and challenges that will last you a lifetime. They will define your college experience and set you on the path of professional and personal development. Seeing you here today reminds me of the beginning of my own academic journey, and the many twists and turns that have brought me this far. As you embark on your own educational journey, I hope you will take inspiration from the good men and women you will meet here, and work hard to achieve all your dreams.

Finally, I wish to re-emphasize the need for you all to take your studies very seriously. Your decision to study as teachers is very key to the development of this nation. The future of Nigeria lies in your hand because no nation can develop above the quality of its education.

On behalf of the Governing Council of this College, Members of Academic Board, the College Community and of course myself, I would like to wish you a refreshing stay at Offa.  Once again, welcome to the Pan African College of Education community. Take advantage of every facility available to develop yourselves fully and to prepare for future opportunities and challenges.  Education comes with responsibility and those of you who are fortunate enough to be here have an obligation to use your education for the benefit of others who are not so fortunate. I pray that God will crown all your efforts with good success as I look forward to your successful completion of your programmes within the record time.

Ladies and gentlemen, I want to thank you all for coming.  God bless you all.
