Precisely, over 11% of the world's gold is held by Indian housewives. This is more than the combined gold reserves of Switzerland, USA, Germany and IMF put together. It is close to $ 1 Trillion according to recent estimates.

And that is precisely one asset nobody can dispossess a woman of in Indian.

To Indian women, gold is everything.

According to Anthropologist Nilita Mehrotra, "A married woman is supposed to be an auspicious woman. She represents Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. She produces the progeny for the family, the food. She takes care of the family, it i's very important. It's central to the way Indians think."
