Have you ever imagined opening your eyes in the morning and then when you look at the mirror you don’t recognize yourself? Your eyes, nose, mouth, or even your hair seems all unfamiliar? When you look around your house, you don’t know who is who. When you examine closely a person and take a good look on his/her features, you’ll be familiar, but when you look at something else then look at the same person again, back to zero, you won’t recognize a thing. Do you believe this is possible?
Sadly, it is.
Face blindness is a neurological disorder characterized by the inability to recognized faces, this is called Prosopagnosia. It depends on the degree of impairment, people with prosopagnosia may only find it hard to recognize a familiar face; others will not be able to distinguish the difference of a face and an object, and yes some people cannot recognize their own face. Face blindness can be very frustrating. People with the disorder are unfamiliar with their family members and their close friends.
Prosopagnosia is taught to be the result of abnormalities, damage, or impairment in the right fusiform gyrus, a fold in the brain that appears to coordinate the neural systems that control facial perception and memory. Prosopagnosia can result from stroke, traumatic brain injury, or certain neurodegenerative disease. In some cases it is a congenital disorder, present at birth, in the absence of any brain damage. –National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes
There is no direct medicine to treat face blindness. They use what they call identifiers to at least recognize people that they interact with almost every day. For example, they rely on voice, unique physical attributes, and clothing. The only treatment is to have coping mechanisms to better identify individual.
