PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
The following are laboratory instruments, machines, devices or equipment being used in determining the physical properties of AB Materials.
MICROMETER
An instrument consists of a C-shaped frame with a movable jaw operated by an integral screw which can be used for making precise linear measurements of physical dimensions such as diameters, thicknesses, and lengths of some of the AB materials. In full, it is called “micrometer caliper”.
PYCNOMETER
Pycnometer bottles are usually made of glass and have a ground glass stopper with a capillary tube for air bubbles to escape, it is used for measuring and comparing densities or specific gravities of some of the AB materials.
SIEVE
Is a device with meshes or perforations through which finer particles of a mixture of various sizes may be passed which can be used in determining and comparing the sizes of small particles of some of the AB materials.
TEXTURAL PROPERTIES
TEXTURE ANALYSER
Is a texture measurement system that moves in either an up or down direction to compress or stretch a sample. It can measure properties such as fracturability, chewiness, stickiness, consistency, bite force and springiness by means of compression, extension, cutting, extruding, bending and shearing tests. It one of the equipment used to measure the texture of some of the AB materials.
SUCCULOMETER
This is used in effectively measuring the texture of fruits by means of com pression.
TENDEROMETER
Designed to give high precision outcomes in the comparative measurement of the hardness and ripeness of fresh or scalded products, particularly peas, beans, broad beans, and legumes; ripeness is also used for legume price determination at source.
VACCUM COMPRESSION
Machine designed for compressing fruits and vegetableswhich is one of the popular modernist technique in doing the texture modification which give many plant foods an attractive translucent appearance and a pleasant, surprising texture.
OPTICAL PROPERTIES
POLARIMETER
Used in measuring optical rotation commonly in sugar, food, chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing industries as a production control and quality assurance tool.
BINOCULAR MICROSCOPE

DILATOMETER
Dilatometry is a method for characterizing dimensional changes of a material as a function of temperature. Its measurement may be performed across a temperature range (e.g. from 800° to 1600°C), or a specific controlled temperature program to mimic industrial processes.

ROTARY VISCOMETER

MINI-TRACTION MACHINE (MTM)

TRIBOMETER
Also called as tribotester is a generic name for a device which is used to measure friction force developed between surfaces in a relative motion. Tribometers are typically also used to measure or at least qualitatively observe wear of the materials.
