Food is indispensable in life, and we cant live without this. In the wideness of the planet we are in, it is said that nothing links us more effectively with the other seven billion people on this Earth than this basic need. And no challenge is more fundamental than providing a safe and reliable supply of nutrients to humankind. All living creatures needs living things to sustain their basic needs, we need agriculture in our life. Population growth, urbanization, climate change, water shortages, and soil degradation has become a problem now. There are many factors affecting the global supply of nutrients and the challenges weve been encountering are tremendous. These challenges affect not only legislatures and governments, but especially those rights at the beginning of the food chain the farmers. Increasing population and consumption are placing unprecedented demands on agriculture and natural resources. Today, approximately a billion people are chronically malnourished while our agricultural systems are concurrently degrading land, water, biodiversity and climate on a global scale. And this is a serious problem everyone should notice. We can all agree, regardless of our background, that feeding everyone while maintaining the Earths ecosystems are critical goals and is very hard to achieve.
In the 21st century, where everything around us has been influenced by technology, applying the scientific knowledge to the practical aims of human life, creating tools that will make the manipulation of human life environment and have a comfortable life to live with. We became so engrossed to the things we used to do, gadgets, social Medias and everything that makes our focus away from the things we need to heed the most. Having a modernized world, we ought to live a high standard life, many dream of becoming a professional but not a farmer. We refused to be called farmers and we are being ashamed that we are one, when in fact thats what our country really need the most, the Philippines is known be an agricultural country. The agriculture and resources we have now are the best gift we can ever have from Above, we are accountable of flourishing these resources and not to abused it and use in everything we want without restoring what we have had.
As the population grows, the demand for the agriculture product increasingly grows too. We are facing difficulties achieving the demand of food we need every day. We know that agriculture plays a great role to end hunger, achieve food security, improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture. Increasing agricultural production is one of the keys to fight hunger and poverty. That is how the FAO, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, put it. And I agree with that, if we lack on something, all we need to do is to supply the shortcoming of it, increasing its production rate to reach the demand needed. But like what others have been questioning, how can we produce more and more while using less and less?
We are now in the phase of our life where everything has been modernized by technology, everyone dreamed of having a convenient life by investing too much on machineries. We live to create something new that will help us live a better life. And we have been studying, aiming to end the worlds greatest problems. One of it is the problem regarding to the insufficient agriculture product, which is really needed to be given attention. Farmers of the past made their way on cropping with just a simple tools and farm animals bolo kutsilyo (which means Bolo knife) , shovels, rakes, carabaos etc. to help them on their works. The past of circumstances of agriculture has not been easy to the farmers, but they gain healthy and natural products because of the organic fertilizers they used, to think that they are not yet proficient about those enhance inorganic fertilizers. Comparing the agricultural equipment we have for the last decades we have more improved equipment now. By the help of the technology we now have high standards machineries for agriculture; we have lots of inorganic fertilizers which is not so good for the product. Agriculturists and agricultural engineers are continuously studying for its betterment. But still we are lacking for the demand of food.
Today farmers have more opportunities to incorporate the newest and best ideas into their operations and businesses. There are many ways we farmers can implement new technology in the farm making them us more excited to learn more from it and improve it. We have ultrasound technology machine which can be used in detecting animals pregnancy as well as determine fetal viability, gender, and calving date which is very useful for those businessman. We have drones which play a big role in agriculture; it can be used in monitoring in the crop scouting to find insects, diseases and weeds in the fields. We have different machineries for different productions of goods, we have lots of machineries but still its efficiency and constant improvement is crucial. We have all the high technology we need in our farms now, but we still have inadequate supply of food. Maybe it is because we lack of farmers to do the job of supplying the agricultural products. We dont have enough agriculturist, agricultural engineers, agribusiness man, we lack of agricultural facilitators which will help improve our agricultural production rate. That is what we need the most, we also lack of schools who offers agricultural and forestry courses. As an agricultural and biosystems engineering student I can say that that is one of the problem why we are experiencing shortage of food production. Also almost all of the farmers we have here in the Philippines is not knowledgeable enough about plants and animals having different notions on making plants grow. All we need now is to encourage more students to take agricultural courses, make a life abundant of resources and food, and help others make a life to live longer. Make a living.
