Memoirs of an Housemaid I
Working at the house was not easy, but Amara knew that she would definitely adjust . Afterall she was in urgent need of the money to take care of her 4 years old son and mother.
Amara was quite surprised when her boss Mrs. George, told her that they already had a chef. Her job would just be cleaning the house.
Amara never knew to at rich people could also hire a person whose job would only be cooking their meals and at thesame time employ someone else whose job would only involve doing house chores. She finally met the chef, who was known as uncle B.
Uncle B had promised Amara that she would be his personal project because the first day that Amara came to the house, she looked so thin and malnourished. Uncle B had said that she looked like someone who had "kwashiorkor", a nutritional deficiency disease caused by lack of proteins in one's diet.
" Don't worry my dear, be rest assured that I would feed you till you are well again. I make sure you eat and eat like a livestock whose owner is planning to go sell at the marker". Uncle B had joked.
Most times while eating, Amara would think about her son and mother in the village and wondered whether they had had anything to eat for that. She would pray that God would send someone like Uncle B to her family who would keep feed them like a cow too. Sometimes, she would breakdown in tears.
As the case of most teenage mothers, Amara had been decieved and abandoned by her boyfriend after she became pregnant.
Neither Mrs George or Uncle B knew about her past or wether she had a son. They knew absolutely nothing about her other than the fact that she can from ogbomosho in ogun state, Nigeria. It was Amina, a friend and colleague of Mrs George that had recommended Amara to Mrs George when the rich woman had mentioned that she was in need of an housemaid.
Amina who was an older cousin of Amara had warmed her to keep keep her mouth shut about her private life when she starts work at the new house.
"To be on a safer side, a woman who had been emotionally scarred in the last should keep her story away from her work-life". Amina had adviced.
Amara soon got used to her new life and became very delligent at her work. She knew she couldn't afford to make any mistakes now. As far as she knew, Amara's feeding and accommodation problems had been solved alreay. So she sent all salary for the first month to her mother so that they could feed and clothe properly.
Amara was so good at the job that one day Mrs George was tempted to also her wether she had ever worked as a maid before.
Amara smiled and said to her that she knew what she had left at her village hence she can't afford to dissapoint the people that are looking up to her.
Mrs George became very curious and asked her what she had left behind. That was when Amara realised that she had said too much and she began to stammer.
