Adieu Blackberry

On January 4th, the blackberry corporation confirmed that it has completely shut down the production of its once popular device and previous versions of the device would not longer support calls and internet operations. On hearing this, I momentarily developed a strong feeling of nostalgia

More than a decade ago, The blackberry was the favorite in my country Nigeria. Alot of youths did the unbelievable just to acquire it. To many young ladies, it was a stamp of honor and vereration to be seen with that phone.

During anniversaries, birthdays, valentines day or christmas,Men would surprise their partners with a blackberry device and the lady would term it as the " perfect gift ever". And as soon as she can, she would display her BBM pin on her facebook for the whole world to see that her " levels have changed" and she's now a big girl!

Young folks were ready to go any length just to have it. Some owners of BB at the time would make others around them feeling inferior and term you "poor" or "jealous" because your parent of your boyfriend could not afford to buy one for you.

Honestly speaking, I never liked the phone and never considered it special even though it was the cynosure of all eyes and anybody especially a lady that owns it is always seen as a goddess of some sort. I always preferred and loved my Nokia N series. Back then, some brands of thid phone were very expensive as their prices were as high as two hundred thousand naira ( over 1 BCH).

I know of a lot of girls whose only accomplishment over the years in the university was owning a blackberry. They never achieved anything else academically. They would always "Ping" on their devices when classes was in progress. .

Some girls might even starve themselves just to gather enough money for their monthly BBM subscription which around that time was about three thousand naira ( 15 dollars). You would see them flaunting their device in the faces of ohters anywhere they went to, be it school, church or market place. They dont hesitate to share their BBM pin with anyone that asked them for it, even with men whose intentions were evil.

I know of a girl whose blackberry was eventually snitched from her bag and she cried for days. It was as if the sky fell on her. She wouldn't eat for days and slipped into dangerous depression. Ofcourse, she was the loud and boastful type who never misses any opportunity to show off just so that others would feel inferoir and intimidated by her.

As a matter of fact, her siblings had to contribute money just to get another device for her in order to help her save face lest she harm herself. This leaves one to only imagine all the nasty things she must have done before she was able to buy the phone.

The race for owning a BB device was very stiff at that time. Many young ladies sold their virginity for a BBM device. Guys would use it to finally conquer ladies who were forming hard to get .

When a lady suddenly sees a guy who she had been been snubbing for a long time with a blackberry, her perception towards him changes immediately. it might even be a gift from an uncle or an elder brother, but all these wouldn't matter to her and she succumbs to him foolishly. Sometimes, a girl might even dump her present boyfriend who was loyal for a new guy who she absolutely knows nothing about just because she saw him holding a blackberry.

Guys wouldn't mind collecting huge debt just to buy their girlfriends the latest model of the device so that they dont dump them for richer guys. There was this story of a guy who was almost beaten to death when he was caught trying to steal an expensive Blackberry from one of the guests at a wedding ceremony, he almost lost an eye and ended up with a broken arm. Another had to do sometime in prison after being caught.

All these happened more than a decade ago. How time flies..... Who would have thought that the almighty blackberry that almost cost the lives of some and made young people to behave in various unscrupulous ways all in a bid to possess it would become something outdated and forgotten today.

Recently I boarded a commercial bus and the passenger seated close to me was on a call. I was shocked to see that the phone was actually a blackberry. I was like " who the hell still make use of a blackberry in today's world?!" . I shook my head. He was obviously embarrassed when he noticed how I was looking at the phone. Needless to say, I felt sympathy for him and wished I hadn't reacted the way I did.

CONCLUSION

All is vanity, never make a fool of yourself or go the extreme to acquire material and worldly things. Few years from now, the luxury phones and stuffs we admire and adore today might become obsolete and primitive tomorrow.

Like I cannot but laugh while going through this article, but nowadays days, where is the blackberry, it has come and gone. Majority of people did all sorts of things just to feel among, they don't care how is going to come , they want to have it by all means. And now it iPhone, they are eager to have iPhone, and a time will come when iPhone will be outdated again...

It High time for us to think , I'm not saying it bad, the level at which we want all this things should be not be high, majority put their life into danger just to get this things, it is time to wise up.

Reading this took me to Lanes of memories. BB! I was using Java phone then and we suffered lots of intimidation. But the truth is , I never fnacied it. It's not like I'm boasting or pretending. The rate is usage and hype was high and that normally put me off. Just like this iPhone of a thing, the phone is very good but considering to use it now is a big no. Yes the money to buy is large but I still prefer the Android spec. The same way people did for blackberry that's how people are tripping for iPhone Currently. And we are sure, iPhone would go away too...maybe when they run out of name to tag🀣

Everyone that witness when blackberry was initially produced will have something to say. I also own a blackberry but not to showing off or follow trending but I always like to explore new thing and experience different it has compared to others.

Trend are just for few period of time they don't last forever , therefore you don't need to almost kill your self or do what's isn't proper to acquire what doesn't last. We need to use our sense always. You love iphone ?

It seems I wasn't the only one that didn't like BB, I seriously hate it back then and even now. The only thing I like about the era of BB was that the subscription was very cheap and later on, I had a way of using it on Android (Android data subscription was crazily expensive back then).

Blackberry really caused a lot of chaos back then, it was like an evil spirit goes with the phone πŸ˜† it even made waves more than what iPhone is doing now, but everyone has forgotten about it now and live goes on

Finally, the once-mighty blackberry is out of the market. The important lesson here is, no matter how good or pride we have over a thing, it will become obsolete someday. Nothing lasts forever.
