Overthinking is detrimental to health

I recently read that overthinking things is very bad for your health, because it causes you more stress, anxiety and there comes a point where it could cause depression. Honestly you are right, I am a person who thinks about things a lot, in the sense that I think of all possible scenarios whether good or bad and honestly it is not bad to think, but if we over think it, it does us a lot of harm.

When we become obsessed with a thought, our mind creates so many options, possibilities and scenarios that it becomes impossible to make a decision, this is called analysis paralysis. The biggest concern is the fear of failure, but if you don't try, you can't fail and you won't succeed. Overthinking also constrains creativity.

What are the consequences of overthinking?

Your energy levels begin to drop, i.e., thinking too much consumes a lot of your energy, so your brain keeps generating unproductive thoughts and scenarios.

You begin to suffer from insomnia or start to sleep poorly, this is because you keep thinking, and that's fine, but it's time to disconnect and close your eyes, leave your mind completely blank. When your sleep is affected, you become trapped in an intense tiredness and lack of sleep.

In eating your routine changes drastically, as your desire to eat (depending on the person) can decrease or easily increase. Although the latter possibility is very frequent. This happens because eating can distract or relax people, as they resort to tasty and unhealthy foods when they go through a very intense degree of stress.

Many times it escapes from our hands or it is difficult to calm our mind to focus on other activities, but it is possible to have control or to recover it. To begin with, you have to realize that your thoughts are getting out of hand, for example, if you are creating three different hypothetical scenarios, you are starting to overthink the issue. You have to find a way to distract and free your mind by doing activities that you enjoy and make you feel good. You can also write a list before going to sleep with everything you are worried about and have to do, this helps to get out of those thoughts that only hurt you.

As I mentioned before, controlling your emotions or thoughts are not very easy, but not impossible, just focus and trust that you can handle it. Personally, it was the same, I created scenarios in my head that had not yet happened and maybe they were never going to happen, every time I reached a point of stress where the headache and body pain was unbearable, my energy decreased, so I felt very exhausted and although I wanted to, it was hard to rest, but I wanted to try to control it, because it's okay to think, take a break to do it, but thinking about it longer than usual, leaving aside your other activities and thoughts is an abuse to our mental, emotional and physical health.

Finally, I will leave you some recommendations that will surely help you to control these thoughts that flutter endlessly in your mind:

  • Be aware of what is happening, every time you feel stress or anxiety take a step back and observe the situation, and, your response to it.

  • Don't give fear a chance, if something didn't go very well before, don't believe that the current situation will have the same outcome, remember that every opportunity is a new beginning!

  • Have confidence in yourself, in your decisions and accept what has to happen or may have already happened. From every situation there is a learning experience, which is the most important thing.

Remember that only you can make it, propose it and do it, it's time to take control of your life, your thoughts and decisions. Courage, trust in you!
