Why do people get envious to others?
One of the most toxic emotions one that you can feel is Envy. In Roman Catholism, it is said to be the fourth of the seven deadly sins.
According to wikipedia, Envy is an emotion which "occurs when a person lacks another's superior quality, achievement, or possession and either desires it or wishes that the other lacked it".
Envy is similarly compared to Jealousy, but it's totally different. It is simply differentiated by Bart Simpson on one of the The Simpsons episode, he said "Jealousy is when you're worried someone will take what you have, Envy is wanting what someone else have." And that statement is rightfully correct.
So why do people get envious to others?
People get envious with others if they are not contented on what they have. You feel envious of others because you feel that they don't deserve what they have.
Example is: you see an article here in readcash with a huge tip given by@TheRandomRewarder and you have an article that got tipped but not too much or nothing at all. There will a part of you that will think, "Why is his/her article got more tip? My article is more deserving to get that tip than him/her." This is what you called Envy.
Envy can be good and bad.
Envy can be good when it becomes a motivation to reach something for your happiness or success. Let me use the example above.
Your envy of the article of one of the writers in readcash because he got huge tips. So you study his/her article and made a goal that you will write an article that can surpass it. This is a good one.
But envy can be generally be bad when it demotivates you. You perceived the one you envy as enemy. Let us use again the example above.
The article that you are envious of becomes a demotivation for your writing skills. You plan or desire to bring down the writer's article by criticizing it.
So how to control being envious?
First is to remember that all people are envious, it is how they cope up with it that matters.
One should recognize their inferiorities and perceive others who have superiorities not as an enemy. This can inspire someone by lifting themselves to reach the heights who they up to rather than desiring to lower down others.
Reacting to someone's shortcomings with acceptance and a desire to improve is good not only for the individual, but for everybody.
