What is a computer virus?
A computer virus is a small software program that spreads from one computer to another and thus interferes with the operation of the computer. A computer virus can damage or delete data on your computer, transmit viruses to other computers through an e-mail program, or even delete everything on your hard drive.
Computer viruses often spread through attachments in emails or through instant messages. Therefore, you should never open an attachment in an email if you do not know who sent you the message or if you do not expect that attachment. Viruses can be disguised as attachments or funny pictures, greeting cards or audio and video files. Computer viruses also spread through content downloaded from the Internet. They may be hidden in pirated software or other downloadable files or programs.
What is a worm?
A worm is computer code that spreads without user interaction. Most worms arrive on computers through e-mail attachments that infect the computer when they open. The worm scans the infected computer for files, such as directories or temporary web pages, that contain e-mail addresses. When it finds e-mail addresses, the worm sends infected e-mails to them and often imitates (or falsifies) the sender's addresses in those e-mails so that they look like they were sent by a known person. Worms then spread automatically through emails, networks, or vulnerabilities in operating systems and often flood those systems before the cause is discovered. Worms are not always harmful to computers, but they generally cause problems with computer and network performance, as well as with stability. They can spread by infected usb flash device from one to another computer as well.
What is a Trojan horse?
A Trojan horse is a malicious software program that hides in other programs. It arrives on your computer hidden in a legitimate program, such as a screen saver. It then inserts code into the operating system that allows the hacker to access the infected computer. Trojan horses do not usually spread on their own. It spreads through viruses, worms or downloaded software.
What is spyware?
Spyware can be installed on your computer without your knowledge. These programs can configure your computer or collect advertising and personal information. Spyware can track your Internet browsing habits and can redirect your web browser to sites other than the ones you wanted to visit.
What is fake antivirus software?
A rogue antivirus software program will try to trick you by telling you that your computer is infected with a virus and will usually offer to download or buy a product to remove the virus. The names of these programs often contain words such as Antivirus, Shield, Security, Protection or Fixer. That's why they look like normal programs. They often start as soon as you download them or when you restart your computer. Fake antivirus software can prevent applications, such as Internet Explorer, from opening. It can also report that some legitimate and important Windows files are actually viruses.
