Watching the news on the ANC channel, a certain politician that is running for Vice President has been interviewed. There he goes again with supporting the farmers and the labor sectors. That statement isn't new to us, though. There are a lot of politicians that are courting farmers and the lower sectors in society every election. Saying a lot of empty promises. They even tried to plant with the farmers, paint with painters, and work in a construction site just to include it in their campaign ads and gain sympathy from the voters. I think you all know they are.
Let's play a 4 pics 1-word game. What do you call them?
Don't get me wrong here. I'm not taking any sides because all of those politicians that are elected have their negligence to their duties. Those people in the picture are just the ones using lower sectors for their campaigns, and there are a lot of other politicians that are like them, too. Just name a few, I don't want to say a name here. You all know who they are. If you don't, they'll just show themselves during this campaign period. Just wait for it. That kind of tactic worked a lot of times.
Just how many times they are re-elected already?
I'm not showing hate to them or taking sides with the other parties of politicians. I'm just showing that for you to be aware and to choose wisely who to vote in this coming election next year. For proof of my neutrality, I can't vote in the upcoming election. It's not that I'm underage, it's just that I haven't transferred my voter's registration details at the near precinct. I'm not a residence here in Manila, so I can't. I'm just observing these promising politicians that are just full promises that are meant to be broken.
As I listen to the radio show of Ted Failon every morning, there are a lot of farmers, calling from different places in the Philippines, reaching out to him to convey their problems to the National Food Authority, Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Agriculture, and Bureau of Customs. They all have one similar complaint, – those mentioned institutions didn't give action to their plea. Maybe they had, but it's not even helping.
Have you ever heard about the issue of smuggled carrots that are circulating now on markets around the Philippines?
The Benguet Farmers reached out to the Bureau of Customs about these smuggled carrots that are killing the farmers' income. They sent the Bureau a letter regarding the matter. The bureau replied that there was no such thing as that when they investigated. The farmers got alarmed by the reply of the bureau and did their investigation. They took a lot of effort to do this investigation just to prove to the bureau that it was happening for real.
The farmers saw it happened at the markets here in the National Capital Region. They even took videos and pictures of it when those smugglers did their business deals with the vegetable retailers. They wrote a letter again to the Bureau of Customs including the evidence they have and the details that they have accumulated from the investigation that they performed. That's just when the bureau took action. They raid those warehouses and confiscate the smuggled carrots in the retailers. That was just it, though. They only took care of the small ones but haven't still caught the main culprit with these smuggling operations.
They even reasoned out that maybe the smuggling operations took place in the middle of the sea and are distributed to the small fishing boats, so it wouldn't be obvious to them when they check the cargos at every port. As if people don't know their magic deals at the Bureau of Customs. Still trying to cover up, though the magic is obvious. If you want to know more details about this, listen to this podcast by Ted Failon on Spotify. The title of the podcast is "Puslit na Gulay", aired on September 30, 2021.
Aren't they insulted or ashamed by the actions of the farmers?
The Benguet Farmers did the job that is supposed to be their job. Yet, they are deaf and blind over there. If it wasn't aired on the radio, maybe they should even blame the farmers for initiating such actions and even threaten their lives just to stop their investigations. The scope of the Benguet Farmers' investigation even reached Cebu and other cities around the Philippines, yet the Bureau of Customs, Department of Agriculture, and Department of Trade and Industry just got started with their investigation and looked like they are just being forced to the jobs that they are supposed to do. If the issue wasn't aired, maybe they wouldn't even reply to the farmers' report.
I'm cursing in silence when I hear this news. They only saw the huge amount of money but not the sufferings of the farmers. Then when the election comes, they would appear like a hero of the farmers in every campaign ad. Let's open our eyes, which citizens of the Philippines. Don't get blinded by the money they offered in exchange for your votes. Well, if they offer you money, just take it but don't let it affect your true votes. It came from our taxes, anyway. Just kidding. Hold on to your principles with conviction.
Research every detail about these politicians to know their platforms and advocacies. Check their accomplishments, the laws that they made, and the programs they made that truly reached the ones who need it. Let's vote wisely in this coming election. Don't be carried away by the amount of money. Remember, if you wrongly vote now, we are going to suffer again for the next 6 years.
