Writing about a conference that occured about child death due to pneumonia in Bangladesh

Ahmed Ehsanur Rahman, associate scientist at ICDDR, Bir Maternal and Child Health Department, said that 24,300 children die of pneumonia every year in Bangladesh.

He presented this information at an exchange meeting held in Mohakhali on Wednesday on the occasion of World Pneumonia Day.

The exchange of views was organized by USAID with the support of ICDDR, Bir Research for Decision Makers (RDM) Project and Data for Impact (DFRI). President of Bangladesh Health Reporters Forum Tawfiq Maruf, General Secretary Rashed Rabbi and 14 other journalists took part in it.

Citing Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey 2017, Ehsanur Rahman highlighted the infant mortality rate in pneumonia.

He said only 42 per cent of children under the age of five with lung infections were hospitalized. Of these, 34 percent of children receive antibiotics.

According to the Bangladesh Health Facility Survey 2016, 45 percent of pneumonia-related infant deaths occur in health centers.

In his keynote address at the meeting, Ehsanur Rahman said that in 2011, 11.6 out of every 1,000 live births under the age of five in the country would have died of pneumonia. At present that number is 6.1. According to the global target, the number of deaths per 1,000 live births should be reduced to three by 2025.

He said 52 per cent of children who die of pneumonia in the country die at home. "They do not get any treatment," he said. On the other hand, 3 percent children are dying at home even after receiving treatment. Again, 45 percent of children die of pneumonia even after coming to the hospital or health center. ”

Ahmed Ehsanur Rahman said children die more from hypoxemia (lack of oxygen in the blood) after contracting pneumonia. It is even more so during Kovid. Children who are deficient in oxygen have a higher mortality rate from pneumonia. So it is important to have pulse oximeter in every health center.

He said, β€œOnly 5 percent of the health centers in Bangladesh have full medical capacity for pneumonia. Fifty percent of health centers do not have oxygen concentrators. One-third of health centers lack other sources of oxygen. Only one-third of district hospitals have pulse oximeters. ”

The death rate from pneumonia among children under the age of five in Bangladesh is 16 percent, said Professor. Md. Ruhul Amin.

He said that in order to reduce the death rate, the child should be exclusively breastfed till the age of 6 months. In addition, breastfeeding should be continued for two years, and after 6 months, breastfeeding as well as home-made nutritious food should be ensured. If you have difficulty breathing, you should be taken to the hospital immediately.

Sameer Saha, executive director of the Child Health Research Foundation, said 50 percent of the causes of pneumonia were still unknown.

"It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post. There is a way to know, but not a desire. If you want to prevent pneumonia, you have to take steps to find out the cause. ”

Kanta Jamil, Senior Advisor, Monitoring, Evaluation and Research, USAID Bangladesh, delivered the closing speech. Shams L Arefin, Chief of Party of RDM Activity and Senior Director of ICDDR, Bir Maternal and Child Health Department was present at the occasion

I have my daughter confined in the hospital last year because of pneumonia. Since then I am worried when she is having a slight cough but then discovered that when I gave her ascorbic acid a bit higher than the normal intake instead of medicine then her cough doesn't continue to occur and just gone.
