What Is Precipitous Labor?

  • This kind of labor is abnormal labor and delivery.

  • Precipitous labor, also called rapid labor, is defined as giving birth after less than 3 hours of regular contractions. 1 Sometimes it's also called precipitous labor if labor lasts anywhere under 5 hours.

  • It is also occurs without warning.

  • Contractions are the first stage of labor and usually build up in intensity as labor progress. so, woman who are going through precipitate labor can sometimes experience very intense cramps right from the start.

Classified as;

  • Precipitate Dilation

    > When cervical dilation is progressing at a rate of 5 cm or more per hour in nulliparas ( first delivery).

  • Precipitate Descent

    >When the fetal descent is progressing at a rate 5 cm per hour or more in nulliparas and 10 cm per hour or more in multiparas (more than 2 delivery)

Reason or Causes;

  • Multiparity

    > woman who has already delivered two or more infants who have achieved a gestational age of 24 weeks or more, and such women are traditionally considered to be at higher risk than the average in subsequent pregnancies.

  • Large pelvis

    > Wider hips provide plenty of room for a baby to pass through the pelvic bones. But hip size isn't the only factor that affects your birth experience

  • Small baby in good position

  • Absence of painful sensation and thus a lack of awareness of vigorous labor.

Complications;

  • Maternal (Mothers)

    >Laceration of birth canal and uterine rupture (because they are not aware that the infant will come out so they can't assist well or guide so there is a higher chance that there will be more damage to the birth canal(vagina)

  • Fetal (baby)

    >Injuries such as falling to the floor in unattended birth(due to unexpected or sudden labor the child is more likely to fall to the floor,)

Signs and symptoms (The manifestation of precipitate labor and delivery are similar to women with normal labor pattern but they appear suddenly with out warning)

  • Mothers complains of a sudden, intense urge to push

  • Sudden increase in bloody show

  • Sudden bulging of the perineum

  • Sudden crowning of the presenting part.

Management

  • Anticipatory guidance for prevention

  • Call for help. Do not leave the mothers alone

  • If time permits, wash hands and wear any gloves ( you have no choice kundi hilain kung lumabas na)

  • Speak in calm tone using short sentence

  • Ask mothers to pant not to push (Para mas maiwasan ang mas malaking laceration).

Thank you for the time and reading, hopefully you have learned something and you can apply if there is such an emergency.

Please be patient with my grammar and English, and thank you very much. God blessed us always
