When Did Knowledge Become Powerful?
Learning is a continuous process and as we learned, knowledge has been treasured in our mind.
However, knowledge should not be just kept in our mind, but rather applied in real life. We cannot just keep on learning without thinking about the supposed functions of the knowledge we gained.
Truth to be told, knowledge can only be powerful when it is used. We cannot say that we are powerful just because we are intelligent or an achiever in academic field, because if we can’t apply that knowledge in our day to day life, that will be considered as nonsense and we could be an inferior one rather than the other way around.
As an education student as of now, we have these subjects classified under PCK (Pedagogy and Content Knowledge), which are very beneficial especially if we got to enter the world of teaching. In these subjects, we are not just taught to learn the content knowledge and just kept it that way, rather, we are learning and expected to apply what we’ve learned in the field of teaching someday.
According to my professor in one of my major subjects, knowledge is functional and always intended to put into practice as long as it is classified as beneficial and not the negative lessons we learned from immoral people.
As students, we are learning not just to get high grades and passed the semester, but rather to survived life’s challenges using that knowledge we gained.
So, I have this cousin who graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Elementary Education years ago who happened to be unemployed until now, not using what she has learned from her college years. I am not judging her for not being able to work as a teacher and for being unemployed, but I am sad with most of the knowledge she has that were not put into practice. My aunt and even my late grandma kept pushing her before to apply even in a private school to use her knowledge and degree rather than wasting them, given the fact that she has been through difficult times just to graduate, but sadly, after she graduated, that’s when everything stopped.
I don’t know who demotivated her to stop from where she is now, and not completely reaching her goals in life. I don’t have any rights to judge her because I am just her cousin and I am not actually in her shoe. However, she could have just use the knowledge she has even in other situation, not only with the intended circumstance where it should be used.
Learning from my cousin’s experiences, I therefore concluded that knowledge is very simple and useless when it was just kept in our mind. As long as it is not put into practice, it will never be powerful enough. Knowledge will only be powerful when it served its supposed function or purpose.
Being intelligent and graduating with a degree are not enough to be called as powerful. Because, what’s the use of that knowledge we have if we can’t apply it in real life? How can we be able to survive and have a decent job and salary if we are just sitting pretty in a corner, not doing anything to improve ourselves with stocked knowledge?
Just like a food, if we will just keep it forever, it will just be spoiled and we can’t be able to eat it again which doesn’t serve its actual purpose.
What’s the use of being intelligent if we lacked actions and practice?
How can we survive in this world’s challenges if we will not use our skills to overcome problems?
How can we prove that we are powerful if we are not letting ourselves to act what’s our mind wants us to do?
CLOSING THOUGHTS
Learning should not be passive, but it should be active. We shouldn’t just keep on acquiring knowledge without putting it into practice. Just like in eating, we shouldn’t just keep on feeding ourselves and sleep later on, we should rather keep ourselves physically fit by exercising and use the energy we gained to do our daily tasks.
In addition, aside from learning and applying the knowledge we gained, it will be more powerful when shared to other people. It will be more satisfying when we know that other people are succeeding in their chosen fields with the help of our teachings.
That’s why, knowledge shouldn’t have stopped and remained in our mind, but rather applied and shared to maximize its function, and the superiority of it will be more evident in real life.
