Fundamental progress has to do with the reinterpretation of basic ideas. The past is the present, and the present the future, to the non-progressive mind. Do not confuse motion and progress. A rocking horse keeps moving but does not make any progress. The mind naturally makes progress, and the will naturally clings to objects; so that for want of right objects, it will attach itself to wrong ones. Progress is the injustice each generation commits with regard to its predecessors. The greatest enemy of progress is not stagnation, but false progress.
