What is Anatomy?

Anatomy is the study of the structure of an organism. Human anatomy is the study of the structure of the human body. Anatomy is derived from the Greek word anatome which means "cutting up". Its Latin equivalent is dissectio. Anatomy as it is known today has a wider scope than mere cutting up. Although traditionally its study depended on dissection, with the advent of imaging technology, it is possible to study the human body without dissection. It is the foundation of medicine and it introduces the student to most of the medical terminology. It adheres to the Terminologica Anatomica. Most of the anatomical terms are derived from Greek or Latin.
