In honor of National Poetry Month, each day of April I am posting one poem from Lisa F. Gullo’s epic anthology “The Evidence I Have Lived” with the corresponding art/quotes that were chosen to illustrate her words. She passed from suicide in December 2018, and this is her legacy. The hope is that you will appreciate it and SHARE it and spread the word so Lisa’s dream of providing a lasting gift to her family can be fulfilled. Click the links below to learn more.
Pendulum
(January 2018)
I never know
What will end up on the page
So many thoughts and emotions
Each one wants to be on stage
I try to write every day
Some days are more fruitful than others
Generally the more I am in pain
The page has more to gain
Happy is always more difficult
Whereas pain practically writes itself
Maybe because we are more acquainted
And Happy and I are much more complicated
Happy almost seems foreign
It doesn’t drip off my tongue
Or hurry to be shared
Happy is certainly scared
Writing about Happy is convoluted
I’m much less suited
To write about what I deem unreachable
What I find unteachable
Happy definitely falls in that realm
At least for myself
I find it definitely unteachable
Negative and I are quite familiar
But Happy leaves me bewildered
While my pendulum does swing
It always prefers what it knows best
And what it knows is feeling lost
I do long for more, perhaps even beg
But I am drawn to darkness
Therein lies my true self
It wants to be seen and heard
Not just stifled on the shelf
