Interesting question. It gained notoriety this way but still any publicity is good publicity. The first use-cases of Bitcoin was Wikileaks and online drug markets. After that big corporations were interested and accepted it as a means of payments. I don't think it would have failed though. Perhaps it would have taken longer to reach the adoption levels it has today.
