A haiku is a short poem. In this poem, you count syllables.
The most known haiku is written in:
5 - 7 - 5 which means 3 lines and each line counts the number of syllables mentioned.
There are poems with more or fewer syllables as well. It's not always possible to translate the same feeling in a haiku if you write in a foreign language.
For writing a haiku you can use a topic or a photo to practice writing. There are some extra things you should know if it comes to writing.
A haiku:
- describes a topic in a special way. It's a kind of mind puzzle.
- the elements of nature are mentioned (weather circumstances, seasons, etc)
- a Haiku doesn't have a title
- a Haiku is written in 3 lines (note: a line is not the same as a sentence!)
My opinion is poetry is something personnel. You share a certain feeling by writing. Be creative if it comes to expressing your feelings and does not care about the fact if your haiku is a 100% haiku as the very first one who started with it meant it to be. People change, societies change, opinions change and so do writing styles as well.
To me, writing is more fun than reading. Mainly because I need to puzzle to find the right words to express something. A haiku might look like an easy, fast post but it takes me way longer than a freewrite.
Na-ture wakes ea-rly, (5)
soon we har-vest what we sowed. (7)
Au-tumn lies a-head (5).

This is cool. I have been wondering about writing a haiku. Thank you for this. I've always thought the numbers are number of words. Now I know :D
