Circle - no horror
Imagine you wake up and you have no memory of what happened.
This scenario seems to be popular. At least it is in the movies and series I'm watching lately just like being doomed, the dead awakening, a new normal, viruses and the fight against the end of the world and 'games' are frequently involved.
There you are. You wake up and have no idea where you are. You are standing next to other sleepers in a strange environment and cannot move a step. You are standing on a red dot (or circle) and it soon becomes clear that you had better stand on it and not touch anyone either. Where are you and (my first thought) how come you keep standing when you are sleeping? Humans are not horses and do not have a knee lock, which means that we collapse when we fall asleep and automatically do not stay on our allotted red dot.
One by one the people around you wake up and that is not all. Whoever tries something is struck by a bolt of lightning. The thoughts of those present are interesting. Of course, they have been captured by aliens and of course, there is a reason why they are standing here.
How exactly the game works, if it is a game at all, is learned on the job. Every two minutes or so, someone is killed. The question now is: who will get this 'honour'?
This film (see, among others, Netflix) may not be the action film you have in mind, nor is it exactly a drama, and yes, you have to like conversations and the train of thought of those present to not find this a waste of time. Therefore, the observant person will definitely learn something from this film.
The involuntary participants are of all ages and races. Some are more present than others, and how could it be otherwise certain statements made at the moment are pronounced and people try to exploit situations. While listening to the sometimes fierce discussions, one thing is clear. Those in the normal world who are already hypocritical and violent are also here. Those who are used to sacrificing others are also doing so here, and just like the world we live in today, older people are used when it suits them but are otherwise just seen as wasters. My grandmother used to say: you think what's old should go first?
In the Circle, this is also the feeling. Those present vote the elderly out first because they too think they have more right to life. Although the viewer only hears something personal from a small number of people (the next attempt to find out who should be eliminated), nothing is known about most of the participants, nor why they are actually voted out by the majority.
Those who remain silent, don't say a word and are relatively inconspicuous are even more likely to be voted out (read: sent to their deaths) than the few people present with big mouths who are able to stir up and manipulate everyone.
Every two minutes or so, someone dies.
This person is either voted out, dies trying to figure out how the 'game' of survival works, is hit by the lightning bolt when they voluntarily sacrifice themselves and step off the dot or the organiser of the circle decides. The rules are not always clear when it comes to the organiser. Those who think that honesty lasts the longest are again deceived in this film. The honest, kind man definitely does not survive the longest.
Psychology is interesting and definitely not for everyone.
Perhaps this film makes it clear how easy it is to talk people down, to manipulate them, but also how vulnerable you are when you have something to lose.
What do those present have to lose except their lives? Why do they think that being married, having a job and having children makes them more important to society? I am surprised that when those present suspect that only one person can survive, nobody says: what if I am alone in the world, what if I am the ultimate guinea pig for those who have staged this?
In any case, the elimination of mankind is rapid.
Stun fifty people put them in a circle and let them fight it out who dies and who is left in the end. Of those fifty, only one is needed that…
Is it all a premeditated game who wins? I think so. Manipulators are also manipulated and those who are not alert will become so and you are not alert if you are afraid. The majority of humanity has already experienced this. Fear does strange things to people, paralyzes the mind and norms and values no longer count.
Even the nicest people turn into monsters when it comes to survival or at least the thought that there is a possibility to live, to win the game.
Is a world with young men only, for example, an asset to society or a new world? I have my doubts, but perhaps all aliens need is some dumb powers, slaves, or guinea pigs to experiment with. In any case, like the viewer, they can certainly learn something from the way we humans treat each other.
What's intriguing about this film except that no one tips over, has to pee and most of them let themselves be talked down so easily? It must be the discussions because otherwise not much happens. Questions I have remain unanswered and that's a shame. The film would have just a little more depth if a little more was known about the participants, for example about the sixteen-year-old boy who was willing to sacrifice himself. Whoever thinks that those who sacrificed themselves got off the red dot got a word of thanks is wrong. Whoever lives in fear, fights for his life has no room to be grateful to others and will only make himself heard if he has something to complain about. This fact is something we also encounter in the present day, especially in the past year. Scared people, hypocrites, cowards always accuse someone else and are never guilty. We also see this in Circle. Others have made mistakes, live a bad life, do nothing for society, are useless abusers but the big mouth himself is perfect.
I know how this movie ends and indeed it's not fair but neither is life. There is a lot to learn about man, behavior and what some call unfair but others the will to survive. In war and love everything is allowed, they say. When it comes to love, this film is mainly about self-love. The winner does not have to contribute to society, be valuable, have no family and in this case not even be obedient.
Obedience is not everything and absolutely not important to those who rule the world and can manipulate and dominate humanity at the touch of a button. A little gas in Circle's case was enough to drive people crazy enough to fight and even kill each other.
In many more movies, we see this happening over and over and also in current life we see how easy it is to manipulate someone.
'Still, waters run deep,' goes the Dutch proverb. He who does not say much appears nice is not automatically someone without thoughts, plans, niceness and trustworthiness. Something to keep in mind if you want to survive in today's world. Your thoughts are no longer yours and your behaviour and choice of words are also controlled with which you are automatically placed in a certain class. Brave New World has long since begun and most of us don't even realize the beauty of manipulation. We play the game because we see it as great progress, think we are free people who can decide for ourselves or because we let fear rule.

I enjoyed your description of the movie. It was just perfect. Now I'm interested in seeing it as I'd like to see what happens at the end. Is it a Tv series or a stand alone movie?
