Do we need a more Empathetic Society?

In recent years I have noticed that in today's society, Empathy is becoming scarce, perhaps the reason for this are the new technologies, polarized politics or individualistic thinking that every day gains more ground in the world. The truth is that this ability to connect with others in a meaningful way, to put ourselves in the other's shoes is decreasing and the saddest thing is that this is passing from generation to generation. In this brief article we will briefly discuss the importance of empathy in our society.

It is not a secret to anyone that humans must be social beings, we are not an island, because at some point we will need to talk to those around us, being empathetic is something so fundamental in our lives, because it helps us to understand, to understand much better the needs and situations of others, thanks to this we can act more compassionately. It was thought that with the new technologies human beings would become more sociable, more empathetic, but the truth is that we are having a totally different effect to what was expected, because unfortunately social networks have made us learn to isolate ourselves more, to reduce our ability to communicate with others.

If you start to evaluate the different social networks, for example a very famous in the world where only videos are uploaded (I save the name to avoid problems), the comments that abound there are mostly of hatred, comparisons, insults, this social network has been used to discredit, to generate attacks against those who have a different thought or those whose physique may not be the most "suitable" for some.

If there is something that empathy achieves in human beings is to help us when it comes to Social Justice, when we are empathetic, we can better understand the inequalities and injustices that occur in our community, region or country, thanks to it we can see the world from a different perspective because you being empathetic, you look for a way to put yourself in the shoes of others, to understand what happens to them and treat them in a fairer way because you can understand what that person is going through.

To be empathic is to see the world through the eyes of the other person, and not to see our world reflected in their eyes (Carl Rogers).

This phrase works wonders for me, because my experience in Empathy goes hand in hand with my current job, being a Customer Service Advisor, is not an easy task, dealing every day with different people, loaded with problems, different types of customers has taught me to put myself in their place, If half of the world had the opportunity to work for a week in customer service, believe me we would have a more equitable and fair society, because we would develop a unique empathy.

Together we can have a fairer, more affective and equitable society, if today it is hard for you to be empathetic, I hope that after reading this article you will try to test your empathy.
