Taking Control of Your Destiny: Overcoming External Obstacles in Life

Our lives are intricately connected and we affect each other more than we realise. In developed countries we often speak about freedom and claim to be able to express ourselves aloud, state our opinions, and make decisions for ourselves… but is this actually true? Society forms strong opinions about various topics and anybody who disagrees is some kind of an outcast. The lack of understanding, acceptance and respect is striking.

External factors affect us all in some way or another. A person living in a country that is experiencing war or famine may have to flee their home and live as a refugee elsewhere. I am feeling privileged and at the same time so sad about those whose lives are shattered, particularly the children who are getting permanent marks. Other external life factors can be the weather and natural disasters. However, there are other seemingly less tragic causes, such as toxic relationships, that can leave equally deep scars for life.

People who are influenced by external factors tend not to have much control over their own lives. They often feel like victims of circumstance rather than being able to make choices for themselves. Their lives are heavily dictated by others — what they do, where they go, and even who they associate with. It is horribly frustrating to have other people dictating your next step; criticising you when your wish does not match with their understanding of what is correct and what is best for you. If someone is telling you what to do all the time or they are limiting your freedom in some way, it is hard to enjoy life. It might also make you feel like you’re not good enough, and often times if you happen to be presented with an opportunity to choose for yourself, you are indecisive and nervous about expressing your opinion.

Being controlled by others can definitely do more harm than good, even if that means making mistakes. One should rather make a wrong choice than listen to an authority’s suggestion about what is best. Constantly listening to others makes you incapable of living a life of your own and achieving your dreams. You are just a puppet in somebody’s hands — even if that somebody is a loved one. It takes a ton of bravery, facing internal fears and fighting with anxiety until you become capable of standing on your own feet.
