For Filipinos, being late and starting things late have always been a part of our culture. Many Filipinos seems to either practice it or accept it, most that we’ve been given a term for it — Filipino Time.
However, what many Filipinos don’t realize is how crippling on our total productivity Filipino Time will be, and the way it says lots about the character of Filipinos. With the deep-rootedness of tardiness in Philippine culture and literature, the public transportation, and our lack of ability to discipline ourselves, Filipino Time will always be a glaring facet of Filipino culture, and its strong network effects speaks volumes about the sort of individuals Filipinos are.
The idea of “Filipino Time” is said to have originated in the Spanish colonial era, when high-ranking Spanish officials considered arriving late in important occasions as a “status symbol.” When Filipinos later adopted it, the American colonizers expressed their dismay by coining the term “Filipino Time,” supposedly to show that “American Time” was superior than ours.
