Did you love the subject mathematics when you are still in school? As a student, did you like solving both simple and complex mathematical problems than to pay attention to the grammar rules in your language class or learning about the kings who died in battles during history classes? Did you enjoy solving equations during chemistry and physics classes?
There's this belief that when you are good at math you can be an engineer or a scientist. But mathematics is not just for those people who have professions that needs great mathematical ability, all of us use math in a lot of aspects of life. When you go to the grocery to shop for supplies, you use your mathematical ability to compute how much you're going to pay the cashier, and you also compute how much change you got if there is any. When you check your temperature you use math. And even when checking your vitals or body statistics, you also benefit from certain mathematical principles!
Math is everywhere!
But there are also some people who don't like math. They think it's too complicated. I have a classmate back in high school who asked me whether I know a course that doesn't have a math subject, but I couldn't answer any. I told her that all the courses I know has math. Then she told me: 'curse the person who discovered mathematics!' That's how a person could hate mathematics so much. In addition to that, there are also people who find the subject mathematics as a boring subject, and they never thought that it is actually related to their daily lives.
So are you the person who loves math or are you the person who find it complex and uninteresting?
In this article let's take a closer look at how fascinating, how accessible and how useful mathematics is.
Use of Math at Home
You want to make your living room look more cozy and pleasant, so you decided to replace some furniture and the flooring as well. You tried to work on your budget, because you have a limited or tight budget for the renovation. So you tried to list down what you need and is trying to figure out how much will you spend on those. Then you ask yourself how much do I need to spend for the new furniture? How many flooring materials should I buy?
So you searched online and looked for the price of the furniture that you intend to buy, you computed your money and checked if the one you want to buy is suited to your budget. Then you stand up and went to where your supplies are kept and got a measuring device. You measured how big your place is. You even drew some diagrams as a representation of your place.
On the above scenario, a person only wants to make some changes on his house, but mathematics is involved. He used simple math as well as geometry.
Geometry came from a Greek word which when translated means "measurement of land." Like it the above scenario, it could involve studying the distance, the area, the volume of different shapes and the lines included.
Mathematics in Everyday Life
Calculus and algebra are the two other branches of mathematics and there's a lot more. Regardless of someone's gender, culture or religion, each of us uses mathematical formulas and principles. And this is continuing for many years, even centuries! Business, different industries, in science and in everyday life of people, mathematics plays an important role in solving some problems and even the hardest riddles in life. You check the time, you use math. You check the weather, math is involved again! You want to bake a cake, you use math again. Be it a simple planning on how to manage your money effectively, balancing your budget, buying supplies, and even when measuring the ingredients when cooking, we all use the language of numbers, and it is very important to use numbers to have an accurate answer!
So even if you hated the subject of mathematics in school or even find it boring, why not have a different perspective? Appreciate its use in our everyday lives, and you'll eventually find it more fun, and you'll see it's importance. Then you might slowly love mathematics..
