Egyptian archaeologists have unearthed 59 wooden coffins preserved about 2,500 years ago. The coffins of the priests and priests of the 27th dynasty were unveiled on Saturday. Archaeologists say several more coffins were found in the Sakkara Necropolis a few days ago.
The coffins were found in a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southern Cairo last August, according to Reuters. They are buried in a 10-12 m deep ditch with 26 idols of the Egyptian god Sekar.Mostafa al-Uziri, secretary general of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, said the coffins were for priests and priests from the 27th dynasty.
The Egyptian Archaeological Mission has been working on this discovery since 2016. Earlier, the tomb of a royal priest of the fifth dynasty named 'Wahti' and mummies of various animals were recovered in the area through this mission.
Waziri said archaeologists found three special shacks where the coffins were stored. The protective seal used in it protects the mummies from chemical reactions.
After the research, the mummies will be displayed in Egyptian museums. There are plans to open the museum next year.
Egypt's Tourism and Archeology Minister Khaled al-Anani said there could be more unidentified coffins in the area, AFP reported. The area is located near a 4,600-year-old pyramid. So the discovery does not end here. It is the beginning of discovery. The archeology minister added that the coffins were closed 2,500 years ago
