Many of us go through life believing that our happiness or unhappiness is largely determined by the events in our environment - for instance, how others react to us. We see our happiness as dependent on factors for which we bear little responsibility. The fact is, though when an event occurs in your life, you have beliefs about that event and those beliefs will result to our emotions. The beliefs may be rational or irrational. A rational belief can be supported by evidence; an irrational belief can’t. A rational belief will lead you to effective ways to deal with the stressful situation; an irrational belief will simply add to your stress.
Beliefs, emotions and behaviors are intimately related and influence one another. Certain emotional states lead to stress and self-defeating behaviors. Other emotions help us behave in ways that are more self-enhancing. The emotions that are most self-defeating to us are anger, anxiety, depression and guilt.
