The oldest known name of Bingöl is Cebel-cur. Jabal mountain, Cur means flowing. It is highly probable that this word was pronounced as Chabakçur over time. Çabakçur means flowing clean water. According to Evliya Çelebi, this name was given by Alexander the Great. According to the rumor, Alexander the Great could not find healing for the unbearable pains in his body, although he applied to many physicians.
