Realizations while watching Single's Inferno

I first heard about this show from my friend. She told me about this Korean variety show that is being streamed on Netflix which features single men and women, but I wasn't interested at first. Then, several days ago, as I was scrolling on my Facebook newsfeed, I kept seeing posts and links about the mentioned variety show. As a result, I decided to binge-watch it since it only has 8 episodes.

If you haven't watched the show, then let me tell you about it.

Single's Inferno is a reality dating show wherein a group of gorgeous and hot single men and women are placed on a deserted island. It's like a survival game because there's not much technology. They slept in tents, they cooked their food in a cauldron and they have to fetch water from afar. They are not allowed to bring their phones as well, and the only way for them to escape is to go on a date in a luxury hotel they called paradise. And to do that they must choose someone from the opposite sex and that person must choose them as well. I will not spill more beans so as not to spoil those who might want to watch the variety show as well.

While watching the show, I had some realizations, and here are some:

The first impression doesn't always last, but it is important to make a strong impression.

First impression is always important as it affects how people will treat us. People say that first impression lasts, but as I said in my blog before, this does not always hold true in my experience. Song Ji-A is the one who makes the most impression in the show; as soon as she steps foot on the island, the other contestants' gazes are drawn to her, particularly the guys. During their interview, the majority of them displayed interest in her and stated a desire to learn more about her. She was also a fan favorite of the viewers, as I saw on other blogs and social media posts. Her strong personality made some of the guys hard to approach her. One of them likes her right away, but he can't even talk to her; yet, as the show progressed, it became clear that Jia is a nice lady. On the other hand, one of the participants, An Yeawon, is not a fan of the crowd. Despite the fact that she is also incredibly attractive, has a lovely smile, and is really polite and nice, no one chose her in the first round.

We meet people every day, and from time to time we also meet new people, it is important to leave a strong impression as it may affect how they treat us. We may not be as pretty and gorgeous as the ladies on that variety show, but if we are confident and has a good attitude, people may like us too, and who knows, we may even stand out among the crowd.

You can't trust men's words.

One of the male participants clearly showed interest in one of the ladies. He was bold enough to confess to her that he likes her and that he would definitely choose her. They were able to escape the island and go to paradise. They had a great time in paradise and the guy expressed his feelings towards the lady. He was a smooth talker and assured her that he would only go to paradise with her, he doesn't even care about their age. But the next day, when they went back to the island, a new rule was imposed for the second selection of who's going to be their date. They were told not to choose the previous girl or guy they went to paradise with. Kang So-Yeon (the name of the lady I was talking about) thought that Oh Jin Taek would want to stay on the island with her, based on what he told her during their date in paradise. So she picked a guy that she is sure will not pick her, thinking that Oh Jin Taek is thinking the same. But Oh Jin Taek actually chose a girl that he has a chance with.

This made me realize that you can't trust what men say. They would say they like you, but the truth is, they have 'reserves'. Once they realize that something would go wrong between them and the girl they are chasing after, they would switch to another girl. Don't feel special when a guy treats you nicely, because he may be nice to everyone too.

Don't chase after guys.

One of the participants also showed that it is important to focus more on yourself instead of chasing after guys. If you see that the guy's emotions or feelings towards you are wavering, then let it be. Just because he showed interest in you, doesn't mean you have to commit yourself to that guy. Don't chase after him, because there is still a lot of fish in the sea, so don't focus on that guy alone. Instead, reflect on yourself to see and realize why that guy chose to go after other girls. Maybe you are not showing interest in him, or maybe you are not leaving hints that his feelings will be reciprocated so he chooses to look after a girl who will reciprocate his feelings. Whatever the reason, if the guy really likes you, he would not look at someone else anymore.
